Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted Saturday that he has a tumor on his kidney — likely cancerous, he said — and will have surgery in early March to remove it.

New Jersey’s 62-year-old governor thanked his doctors for catching it early.

And so did his wife, Tammy Murphy.

“I know Phil and he’s a fighter. We’re grateful to his amazing team of doctors who detected this tumor early.”

Gov. Murphy also knows he’s not alone.

“Over 50,000 New Jerseyans will hear the words “you have cancer” this year, so I’m far from alone here,” Murphy tweeted. “It’s a situation that far too many families find themselves in. That’s why we’re fighting for them each and every day.”

Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver would assume Murphy’s duties if needed during any surgical procedure, treatment and recovery.
