Bill banning assault weapons passes in Virginia House
The legislation expands the definition of “assault firearm” and makes it a felony to sell or purchase certain assault weapons.

RICHMOND, Va. — A highly-contested bill that would make it a crime to own an assault weapon in Virginia passed the House of Delegates on Tuesday by a slim margin.
House Bill 961 made it past the House with a vote of 51-48.
The bill expands the definition of an assault weapon and bans anyone from purchasing or selling certain semi-automatic firearms, including AR-15 style rifles. Large-capacity firearm magazines, silencers, and trigger activators would also be prohibited.
It also forbids anyone in certain Virginia localities from carrying a shotgun with a certain magazine capacity.
A House committee advanced the bill last week.

If this measure becomes a law, it would be a Class 6 felony starting July 1. However, anyone in possession of a large-capacity firearm magazine, silencer or trigger activator has until January 1, 2021 to render them inoperable, surrender them to police, or just get them out of Virginia altogether.
The legislation now moves to the Senate, where moderate Democrats have indicated they are unlikely to support the measure.
Heated debates over guns have dominated this year’s legislative session, as Virginia has become ground zero in the nation’s raging debate over gun control and mass shootings.

This Bloomberg spending his money there. They are trying to use VA as a testing grounds. Fortunalty the registration failed, but this is very dangerous for the country. They are also looking to outlaw semi auto pistols. So basically they want you to own a lever action rifle and a revolver, AND limit how much ammo you’re allowed to own. Also, they want every non state owned firing range closed.
Lou Amato where does it say semi auto anything? I do agree no civilian needs nor has the right to have what is been classified as assault weapons. Unless they can never be fired ( I.e. welded bore or firing pin area). Which does include AR15 n AK47 which have been used inmost mass shootings in this country. Scott A Barnes the original bill called for banning semi auto pistols. Its tabled for now. Along with registration. However, they along with most pink hat wearing Democrats dont understand what an assault weapon is. The 15 and 47 are no more assault weapons than a chair. Or hatchet. Or revolver. It’s still one shot per trigger pull. I’m ok with 15 round magazine limits. I’m ok with background checks, very ok with them. But red flag laws and infringing on what can be purchased is violating rights. It’s like telling people they cant buy a car that does over 70.

And never mind the fact it’s so I constitutional, almost every sheriff in VA has said they are not enforcing these laws and just about every county is a gun sanctuary. They know its a problem. But all that Bloomberg has made them crazy.

Why would criminals turn in their illegal guns, no one knows they have them to begin with. Unlike legal owners who are known to local and state government by the paper trail from all the applications and federal background checks along with fingerprints.

How many 15rd magazines were handed in when the state was stripped down to 10? None. Criminals will not comply,but neither will law abiding gun owners.
I don’t own guns but I feel that you should have the right to own and shoot any type of gun that’s not fully Automatic.

Assault weapons are illegal in NJ too and there’s still no uprising. God forbid you have an adjustable stock and a pistol grip on your rifle here, that makes it an assault rifle by NJ standards ????.
Maryland is next. They are trying to pass a bill that requires all “assault” and “sniper” firearms to be registered. Registration fees can’t exceed $1000, it’s a progressive scale that increases the fee every year until it’s capped. Failure to comply results in a felony conviction.
Does this mean my 30-06 is a Sniper rifle? I mean Carlos Hathcock got all his kills in Vietnam using a Winchester 30-06. It’s crazy what states are doing now with gun legislation.
