BERKELEY – A Beachwood man was arrested and charged last week after eluding a police vehicle while intoxicated during a motor vehicle stop, police report.

David Davis, 28, was charged with eluding, driving under the influence, unlicensed driver, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, speeding, driving at risk to cause accident and failure to stop.

On June 5, Berkeley Ptl. Sean Varady observed a black van driving erratically in the area of Veterans Park. The van was seen speeding towards Route 9 and later disregarded a red light Central Parkway to Butler Blvd. When Ptl. Varady attempted a motor vehicle stop, the van continued driving in an attempt to elude the officer.

The vehicle was forced to stop once it reached a dead end at the end of Butler Blvd at the Barnegat Bay, police said. Ptl. Varady then took the driver, Davis, into custody.

An investigation found that Davis appeared to be under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. He was then transferred to police headquarters where he was processed and charged. Davis was remanded to the Ocean County Jail in accordance with NJ Bail reform.
