   Ok, used to work for a water utility, before anything like this happens to you, locate your water meter. There will either be a valve or a “stop” on the incoming side of the meter (stops are just valves that are turned on and off with an adjustable wrench, they only turn about 90 degrees). If anything like this happens to you you’ll know where to turn the water off before too much damage is done. If you live in an apartment ask your landlord or super how to secure the water to your unit in case of emergency. I’m pretty sure they’ll be happy to tell you to avoid getting a call at an inconvenient hour in the future. 🙂
