A state-mandated commission has asked the state not to set a THC limit on Michigan drivers.
The Impaired Driving Safety Commission, appointed by former Gov. Rick Snyder, is a six-member panel tasked with scientifically studying the effects of THC on driving. The panel included a medical marijuana patient as well as experts in law enforcement, forensic toxicology, cannabis pharmacology, and traffic safety. The commission studied pre-existing research on the relationship between cannabis and driving and conducted its own roadside fluid tests in conjunction with the Michigan State Police.
The result of the report found that there is a weak correlation between THC bodily content and driving impairment. In particular, the report cites that due to the rapid elimination of THC bodily content, the THC levels may be significantly lower at the time of a blood test, thereby grossly underestimating the amount of THC bodily content at the time the individual was driving.
The report also suggests that “[The] ‘no tolerance’ policy in the state of Michigan, which assumes impairment at the level of detection, ≥1ng/ml, might falsely conclude that an individual is impaired.”
The commission also notes that frequent cannabis users require a much higher THC bodily content in order to achieve the desired effect. In other words, a state-imposed limit for driving on THC may not accurately reflect the driver’s level of impairment.
To reduce driver impairment, the commission recommends more research, additional training for law enforcement, and increased public education.

Oh get the fuck outta here lmao Look I’m not against rec marijuana but I’ve smoked it and if you are saying that driving high isn’t driving impaired you are just making shit up to push a pro pot agenda.
Mike Spike
Not our article or findings. From a joint commission in Michigan.
Ocean County Scanner News joint commission ?????
Heh heh you said joint commission
Anyway-
You’re spreading it because it pushes the agenda you want. Commissions, especially government ones, aren’t necessarily worth anything. Driving high is driving impaired, change my mind.
….but half the people driving are on some type of pill?
Mike Spike I think the outcome of the study leans more to an unreliable method to test impairment. Driving under the influence of any drug DOES impair motorists, but there is no standard to test for weed.
Mike Spike you r 100% correct ,
I
My insurance co doesnt have acceptable limits made up for men working around machinery and high voltage
..for my company
Ocean County Scanner News I see what you didnthere “Joint”. Also this study is complete bullshit.
On a side note I work for a Dr. & “most” of the elderly patients are on 19 different medications yet at 80 are still driving themselves to appointments?Driving has changed since they got their licenses 65 years ago? Reflexes/hearing/sight are compromised?that’s scary
Mike, you can have thc is your system and not be impaired at all. It can be from days prior.
Ocean County Scanner News joint commission lol
Hey I’m pro pot but you can take too much benadryl too be able to drive.
Mike Spike said it!!!!!!! Can you imagine the percentages quadrupling of Friday after work tokers taking to the Garden State Parkway and heading down the shore!?!?! YOU WANT TO TALK TRAFFIC JAMS!?!?!? All those smokers will be crawlin’ Down the parkway……laughing their kicked back asses off and loving the molasses flow of the ride!
U dont think everyone that smokes is already doing that lol?
Ethan Walter hence the word…….QUADRUPLE……think of how it is now!!!! LOL! ?
This study is NOT telling people driving high is okay. It is saying there is no reliable method to test drivers for THC limits when suspected of being impaired.
Which is logically trying to support a position…
Ocean County Scanner News there really is though. Just like the officers in lakehurst look for, reactions, pupils, speech.
Dave Meyer
When Michigan legalized weed they wanted something similar to an Alcotest to detect roadside impairment of THC.
I see what you’re saying but sentences like “The result of the report found that there is a weak correlation between THC bodily content and driving impairment.” can be readily interpreted as “THC content doesn’t impair my driving” when what it’s trying to say, I think, is that the bodily content isn’t correlated to impaired driving because it also isn’t refective of the person being impaired at that time. You can be impaired with a low content, or not impaired with a high content because the content testing method is imperfect. But the article is, in my opinion, written in a way to leave a casual reader believing that THC doesn’t impair their driving.
Ocean County Scanner News right, no actual test besides blood/urine, but at the scene they can definitely tell, through training, just like dogs are trained to sniff drugs out, the humans are trained extensively as to look for.
Dave Meyer correct, unless they suspect a reason that you are driving impaired, they will not test you.
You can have thc in your system, and not have used marijuana in 3 days. So you are not driving impaired, but its in your system. So therefore THC in your system does not make you impaired.
Melanie Nau Keating right. And there are levels in the blood/urine tests if they do need proof. THC levels aren’t high if someone smoked 3 weeks prior and the trained officers would know if a test was needed.
I’ve passed several “drug detection” escapades law enforcement tries on you. The tests have been scientifically proven that they dont work due to each individual has their own chemical reactions towards Cannabis. This means my tolerance is higher than yours so it takes me a lot to get stoned while it takes you a hit or 2. Now your impairment is more sever than mine as well. So these tests cannot determine a person is impaired or not reliably. There is some promise of new testing equipment so maybe we can get this all sorted out soon enough.
Ocean County Scanner News so it shouldn’t be legal until you can test for impairment, duh.
Dave Meyer std field sobriety test is not allowed for pot.
Federal highway commission did a study years ago. They found that pot smokers tended to drive less aggressively ,followed the speed limit, and were more courteous.
Dave Meyer levels are irrelevant as they are not correlated to impairment, too much individual variability.
Melanie Nau Keating LoL, no that’s faulty logic, at some level you may be impaired, no test for it yet.
Dave Meyer yes but they are not allowed to arrest someone due to appearing under the influence, smelling of pot or booze, they need proof and there is no test for marijuana yet
Jon Brooks show me
And all news outlets have an agenda, ours has always been Pro-Legalization of Weed.
I’ve been trying to tell ya
???
Lynn Whitlock
SAYIN’?
Seriously?
It makes you drive under the speed limit lol
Isn’t it a psychoactive drug? I’m pretty sure THC stands for This Harms Cognition
Ive been in a car with someone who was driving high.. Im still alive and there was no accident. ??
