During our weekly DWI/DUI reports for each town, we came across an interesting case. As per the Point Pleasant Police report 19-40-AR, local Chiropractor Dr. Terrance Coleman was driving intoxicated, struck a curb, and struck two vehicles.

On 02/08/2019 around 19:17 police received a call from a witness who observed a two-car crash in the area of NJ 88 @ Bay Avenue. Witness further explained that the driver of the Jeep was swerving and ran over two curbs. At the intersection of NJ 88 @ Bay; Dr. Coleman’s Jeep ran the red signal and struck another vehicle. Upon arrival, the police spoke with the victim in his damaged vehicle, and that driver indicated that Dr. Coleman was allegedly slurring his speech while engaging in conversation.

Officers approached the Chiropractor and immediately recognized him as Dr. Terrance Coleman, who is a local doctor in town. As Coleman sought out his credentials for the officer, they noted a strong slur in his speech and a strong odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from his breath. His eyes were observed to be very watery and bloodshot.

Upon further questioning, Dr. Coleman denied using all alcohol, drugs, medicine, or anything else that could have impaired his driving. The officers took him to a nearby lit gas station to perform field sobriety tests. It was apparent to the officers on scene that Dr. Coleman was unable to perform the tests successfully, and was likely intoxicated during his operation of his motor vehicle.

Dr. Coleman was placed under arrest and transported to Bay Head PD for an Alcotest. There he blew a recorded breath sample of 0.12% BAC, which is over NJ’s legal limit of 0.08%. His vehicle was impounded as per John’s Law, and Dr. Coleman was released from police custody to Mr. Campbell. Dr. Coleman received two summonses from the incident; one for DWI and another for Reckless Driving pending a March court date.

Interesting is in the arrest report, it indicates police handcuffed and searched Dr. Terrance Coleman prior to transporting him to PD HQ. On page 3 there is a redaction blacking out what they found when they searched him.
