Wrestlers Win State Title

The Southern Regional wrestling team defeated Hunterdon Central, 34-27, on Sunday to win the state Group V championship. It’s the third state title in school history. The Rams previously defeated Passaic Tech, 49-12, in the state semifinals at the RWJ Barnabas Center.

Southern defeated Howell, 30-28, Friday for the South Jersey Group V sectional title. It’s the 13th sectional title in school history.

Top 10 Sports School

Niche ranked Southern Regional High School the ninth-best public high school for sports in New Jersey. The Rams placed second in the rankings in 2017 and 2018.

Methodology included parent and student surveys, championships won, the number of sports offered and overall participation, according to Niche.

‘Crazy For You’

The Southern Regional Theatre Company will present “Crazy for You” at 7 p.m. from Feb. 27 to March 2 in the 9/10 building. Advance tickets, which will sell through Feb. 20, cost $10 for students and $12 for adults. Remaining tickets will be available at the door starting at 6 p.m. on the night of each performance.

Student Art on Display

Artwork is on display for high school art classes and photographic classes in the 11/12. The displays are divided by art class, including Painting and Drawing I, II, III and IV.

The photographics classes display their work as part of a competition. Students and staff voted on the best pictures in several categories. The top three in each category will advance to the state level.

Informational Elective Fair

Teachers showcased their election courses on Jan. 25 in the high school and Feb. 1 in the middle school. A wide array of high school classes and programs were offered to help students with their course selections.

Highlighted classes included food courses, child development, clothing construction, world languages, ROTC and wood shop.

Parent’s Day Out

Southern Regional’s Future Educators of America will host a day of crafts, games, cooking and gym time from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 23 in the 11/12 cafeteria. The event is open to children ages 3-12, costing $15 per child and $30 per family.

All Ocean County Runners

Southern Regional girls cross country runners Emily Furlong, Gianna Citarella and Rachel Short made 2018 first-team All Ocean County, voted on by the Shore Track Coaches Association. They were honored at a banquet Jan. 27 at McLoone’s Supper Club in Asbury Park.
