An un-named resident of Belmar in Monmouth County is currently receiving rabies post-exposure treatment. This treatment was needed after they were bitten by a raccoon in their own yard.

The raccoon has since been caught by the Belmar Police Department and the Monmouth County SPCA and will be tested for rabies.

Attacks against humans are relatively uncommon, however attacks to outdoor pets are much more likely. The Monmouth County Health Department wants to remind residents to keep their pet’s rabies shots up to date.

For those in Ocean County, the TOMS RIVER free rabies clinic is on January 19th!
