With the recent tragedy at N.J. 37 @ NJ 166 of a Pedestrian fatally struck, we’ve been asked to make a PSA to help people cross the streets safely.
Remember- WAIT for the WALK!
Don’t assume vehicles can see you, and don’t cross on a Don’t Walk signal. Press the crossing buttons to activate the pedestrian stage of the signal’s cycle. When pressed, the walk signal will illuminate with enough time to safely cross the roadway. Unless the button is pressed, the signal doesn’t know you’re waiting to cross.
Cross only at crosswalks, and don’t assume the right of way at any time. Remember, you could be right- dead right!
Vehicles MUST STOP for pedestrians at an unsignalized crosswalk.
My god people are just too dumb nowadays
Maybe also put extra big signs at every single intersection reminding people that red means stop? Why stop there? New warnings on everything?
Patrick Brennan and another sign to explain what turn signals are and how to use them.
It’s sad that this even has to be said but, here we are, I guess people now think with all the shopping malls having the yield/stop for pedestrians is now carried over to highway traffic. People just do not look and assume you will stop.
This is no different than people on the curb jumping out in front of moving cars. They can’t figure out that the sign says “IN THE CROSSWALK ” and not on the curb.DUH!
True. I also see a lot of people walking in front of moving vehicles just because they assume they have the right of way. In my day we waited until we can cross.
I’m no rocket scientist but that intersection scares the shit out of me driving. I cant even dread the idea of walking across it…
I worked Saturday night and on my way to work there were cars racing on 37 E. A few of the racers made a right on Clifton and I saw him coming down Batchelor (yes they were noisy and zipping along). They drove like nuts down 37 and did a U turn back on 37 W and sped along westbound. This was on Vaughn and 37. I called the TR Police Department and reported it. I hope it wasn’t this person driving. Btw, I arrived at work at 11:12 pm so it was this time frame. Be careful everyone. Too many vehicles to play in traffic.
Chris , doubtful it was same kid. One of my best friends witnessed the accident. The kid in the car had the green light, the woman ran in front of him out of no where
Its sad as hell that they actually have to tell people these things.
Very sad someone lost their life. Extremely sad that in 2019 we have to teach people how to safely cross a street. That is taught when you’re a kid. Smfh
What if it’s not only the pedestrian. What if it’s their right of way and the person in the car has the red light and decided not to yield . Like most people driving on rt 166 do
Those of you blaming the pedestrians are ridiculous; I’ve never in my entire life lived in the state where nobody obeys the rules! . I don’t drive I walk everywhere; and for the 2 years that I’ve lived in Toms River not once did a vehicle yield to a pedestrian (me) while crossing rt 166. Initially there was only one side of the road where there was an actual crosswalk and with the way people drive you can’t assume shit. As a driver you are taught to YIELD to pedestrians. Nobody even stops at stop signs in parking lots anymore. Do you know how many times a day I almost get hit by a car crossing rt 166? The crosswalk says I can walk so I walk; but what happens if you’re making a right and your light is green and you see people in the crosswalk? You yield right? Wrong half of the people that use rt 166 DO NOT YIELD to pedestrians. Just like you say people were “taught” to cross the road when you’re a kid. Well when you decided you wanted to drive and get your license all of you were taught to yield to pedestrians. How many of you actually yield ? If you’re gonna say something at least have viable information. Just because you’re in a car doesn’t mean you have the right of way.
Jayce Rylan Basco cars are not required to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks that are regulated by a traffic light. In those cases the pedestrian must wait for the signal.
Which was the case in the accident they are refering to. The cars had the green light. One of my best friends witnessed the accident. She ran out of no where late at night
It happens all the time; it happened to me today; I walked to the store on the corner of old freehold and 166 where there are crosswalks and it was my turn to cross and the cars making a right didn’t even stop because their light was green as I was crossing it’s ridiculous how people expect everyone else to follow rules except them
people interpret the laws to suit their needs
Pedestrians having the right of way just made most of them assume they have no responsibility to yield or look for oncoming traffic. We were always taught to look both ways before crossing !! What happened to that! While pedestrians may have the RIGHT of way it is ALSO their RESPONSIBILITY to look and cross accordingly. It jeopardizes the driver and the pedestrian to assume they can stop a 1000 lb vehicle in time
Looking for a lawsuit??
I never cross in front of a driver until they stop and allow me and as a driver it gets more difficult to navigate parking lots and roads and it is not fair to the drivers who hold all responsibility!!! The ignorance of people is getting to the point where no one cares and blames each other for everything and assumes zero responsibility for their actions
Then tragedy occurs. Sad for all of humanity
Cross at the green not in between. Look before you leap.
Gerri Ann Eichele uh no not looking for a lawsuit I’m just saying that both persons ( the pedestrian & driver) both have rules to follow on the road. When the little person lights up for me to walk I walk which mean it’s my turn to cross. Mine. And if I’m crossing and somebody in the right lane in front of me or in the left lane behind me turning in my direction; it is their job to stop and yield to me because I’m already on the road crossing. Not try to race against me and try to turn before I get to that section of the road. You people talk like you never crosses the street before; that you never been almost hit; or almost hit a pedestrian in the crosswalk because you’re light is green and you have somewhere to be in a rush. I’m supposed to wait until all the cars go; when it’s my turn to cross? Are you kidding me? Share the fucking road share the responsibility. The blame is on both parties who weren’t paying attention. A lot of the drivers in and out of this area don’t even stop at stop signs. Just because you’re in a car doesn’t mean you’re always right.
They need one in Spanish!!!
We don’t need to be hitting none English readers, cause we will get sued as they have more rights then real Americans hard working Americans who pay taxes!!
Do people really not know how to cross the road and ask you how? I believe the walk signals are not timed rite at the intersection.
Maybe they should have put an overpass for pedestrians. This is such a busy intersection for people and cars.
