Early this morning the Lakewood Fire Department was dispatched to the area of 420 Cross St for a reported fire in a school.

Police reported a well involved fire at a school and a General alarm was transmitted.

Engine 5 arrived to find a 1 story wood frame school with heavy fire venting from the rear of the structure.

Responding Lakewood Fire Units were Chief 1, Chief 2, Engine 5, Ladder 5, Engine 1, Reserve Engine 5, Tower 1 and the RAC (Rehab and Care). This stubborn fire ultimately required multiple mutual aid companies from Bricktown, Jackson, Point Pleasent Boro and Point Beach.

Excellent work by all responding companies to bring this persistent fire under control in approximately 2 hours. Units remained on scene until about 5am.

The Ocean County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating for cause and origin.
