Britan’s longest-reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II, died at the age of 96. This news was confirmed by Buckingham Palace, who said she died Thursday at Balmoral Castle, which is her official residence in Scotland.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,”

Earlier in the day, palace o0fficials had issued a statement stating that the queen had been put under “medical supervision” at Balmoral as her doctors were “concerned for Her Majesty’s health.” All senior members of the royal family traveled quickly to be by her side.

The queen, British people and the commonwealth nations had been celebrating the Platinum Jubilee, or 70 years on the throne. But the queen had only made a few brief appearances at events in her honor to mark said anniversary in June due to mobility issues and discomfort.
