A 35-year-old man died early Tuesday after he was rescued from an Ocean County lake while swimming with two other men, police said.

Santos Chacon-Hernandez, of Lakewood, and two other men apparently became fatigued while swimming in Harry Wright Lake. Manchester Township at about 4:15 p.m. Monday, according to police.

Good Samaritans spotted the trio in distress and helped two of the men to shore, township police Capt. Vincent Manco said.

Chacon-Hernandez was submerged and later pulled from the water by members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department and Manchester Career Fire Department, police said. Rescuers provided first aid and he was rushed to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where he later died.

A preliminary investigation by police found the death to be an accidental drowning, according to the captain.

“The Manchester Township Police Department would like to remind the public that swimming across Harry Wright Lake is prohibited, and that swimming or bathing is only authorized when lifeguards are present,” Manco said in a statement. “The Manchester Township Police urge the public to abide by these township ordinances for everyone’s safety.”
