It is sad from time to time Ocean County Scanner News (OCSN) needs to make announcements like this, but we have been averaging every 6-9 months lately. We are not sure why people need to be so mean-spirited and hate-filled in the Facebook comments- but here we are yet again. A year or two ago the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office made this public relations campaign- which still carries a solid message. OCSN has a pretty liberal moderation policy for public comments, which has not changed in the 8 years of our existence. Since our media organization is NOT a professional outlet with full-time staff; we have never had any social media directors to police the public comments. When something is brought to our attention- we do our best to take action within 24-48 hours of notification.

As explained previously- we take no responsibility for ANY comments on our Facebook or Instagram pages. OCSN does not have the capability to turn off or silence comments for any our individual stories. We continue to ask/request that people report offensive/hate-filled comments using the Facebook Report option- our admins do not have widespread capabilities to address individual complaints. You can use: [email protected] to notify our OCSN administrators if something needs serious attention and we will do our best to investigate.

The easy answer is to just be nice to everyone; regardless of whatever protected class of society some of you feel the need to make jokes about. Many did not listen- and people are learning there are consequences to their actions well beyond the world of OCSN. Our website is based on freedom of press & freedom of speech (www.ocsn.news)- but Facebook has their own set of rules/community standards. Since we operate a Facebook & Instagram page- we need to abide by their rules on their platforms.

Please be advised- outside organizations, civil rights & anti-Semitic watchdog groups monitor our comments, along with most other comments among social media outlets for NJ. We have no recourse but to take action when presented with evidence to ban certain people- aside from Facebook automatically hiding offensive/reported comments. Much of this is done automatically- but repeat offenders will find themselves exposed on other social media outlets with little recourse. Stop being jerks.

REMEMBER: Everything on the internet is saved and archived for eternity.

HATE HAS NO HOME IN OCEAN COUNTY -nor @ Ocean County Scanner News. Be kind.
