White the cause still remains under investigation; the New Jersey State Police have stated that initial reports came in at approximately 5:06pm for a fire in the area of MP91 in Brick Township and stated that information preliminarily revealed that there was a fire in an underground drainpipe that runs behind the parkway. The pipe (that Brick Utilities identifies as a 12inch Sanitary Sewer Main in a 36inch steel casing pipe) runs underground beneath both the north and southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway (between MP92.8 and 92.9).

Both directions of travel were closed for an extended period of time but were re-opened at approximately 3:15am by some reports and the State Police state they are fully opened. As previously stated, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but we have reports that there was a large police presence including the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, Brick PD, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office at the mobile command which was located behind the Herbertsville Fire Company Station No. 1 (Station 24) Annex on Burnt Tavern Road near the entrance to the Garden State Parkway.

Throughout the day, there have been many maintenance and presumably engineering vehicles parked on the parkway near the fire, and even seen within the grounds of Evergreen woods. While this remains speculation at this point, sources have told us the sewer pipe has been severely compromised. While the road is safe and drivable it is likely that repairs will need to be made to the pipe in the near future.
