An Amazon driver was carjacked, and taken on a police chase across Passaic County according to Public Safety Director, Jerry Speziale.

A couple of Paterson police officers, Officer Manuel Lojo and J. Murray were responding to a low priority call around 3:30 pm when an Amazon delivery van blew past a stop sign, and the driver try to jump out of the moving vehicle. When the driver noticed the police officers, he began to franticly wave them down, Speziale said.

The officers pursued the van across Paterson, and when they would attempt to pull the van over, the carjackers would slam on the gas pedal. The carjacker then pulled into freight train tracks where it got stuck. The carjacker tried to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended and identified as Rafael Rodriguez, 37, and believed to be homeless.

“These officers are endowed with the necessary skills of good police officers,” Speziale told the dailyvoice. “They quickly recognized the situation for what it was, rescued the driver, and took the suspect into custody without further incident.”

Rodriguez was processed at the police headquarters and sent to the Passaic County Jail.
