GSP (Barnegat): Garden State Parkway northbound remains closed north of Interchange 67 as authorities investigate a double-fatal motor vehicle crash from earlier this day. We believe this crash began as a wrong-way driver on the highway, and it resulted in involving possibly three-vehicles. The total number of vehicles and patients involved is not confirmed at this time. At one point one vehicle was overturned, and another was possibly on fire.
As first responders arrived to the horrific scene, it was quickly determined there would be multiple victims. Shortly thereafter it was declared the two serious victims would be DOA, or deceased. No word on the extent of injuries for other motorists involved in this collision.
Expect the roadway to be closed for a while as the NJSP Fatal Accident team does their investigation. As OCSN obtains more details about this crash, we will publish a new updated story. It’s tragic that 2021 had to start out this way. Please pay attention everyone.

They did an emergency, immediate stop on the parkway a few weeks ago and blocked off all of the traffic within in minutes of there being major debris in the road. If they had received reports of a wrong way driver, and there were troopers stationed on the park way they would of been able to stop on coming traffic. If we’re being honest, anyone who drives on the GSP knows the average speed of traffic is 70 to 90 mph.
Not to mention, people texting while driving, road rage, tailgating, aggressive driving, driving 100 mph, cutting off other cars, passing on the right, crossing multiple lanes, people racing each other, failure to yield the right of way, etc.
The list goes on and on. In fact, I’m surprised there aren’t more collisions.
It is a proven fact, vehicle collisions are prevented by proactive Police enforcement of motor vehicle laws.
The lack of enforcement directly contributes to the uptick of collisions.

I feel so horrible for the first responders and police who had to show up to the scene, and lost two people in the process. Alex Andria Friends of mine are volunteer heavy rescue and extrication. They work a portion of the parkway farther north in monmouth county. For every person they save extricating them from the wreckage, which they train intensively to do. Its the few like this where they have to wait for the investigation is complete, and extricate the deceased, that haunt them. I tip my hat and then some to these folks. That is gruesome duty.
As soon as the alert came over, my stomach dropped. Praying for comfort for these families.

If any of the public’s theories whom didn’t witness the incident are deemed useful, we will reach out to the original author. They apologize ahead of time for not being able to reconstruct how a wrong-way driver went +/- 30 miles southbound in the northbound lanes and resulted in 2 fatalities by your lunchtime.

We have people telling us they saw the motorist going the wrong way around Interchange 81. There are multiple 911 calls and other instances of vehicles swerving. Something went very wrong here.

I passed the wreck around 10:15, very few cars on the Parkway this morning. Still, I’m guessing medical issue or intoxication. I do exits 63-83 and back almost every day, and it takes 25 minutes. 81-67 would take about 20. I don’t see how anyone could make it from 81 or even further north to 67 going the wrong way if they’re not suffering from like dementia or low blood sugar, or heavily intoxicated.

Yes- there wasn’t anyone available, or they were behind trying to catch up. Troopers usually have 2-4 patrols assigned to each Troop on the GSP. It was divided into three districts, with this incident falling between Galloway and Sayreville (old Pleasant Plains). It’s possible all their units were tied up on calls, or too far away. The mutual aid call went out over SPEN and mutual agencies to get any law enforcement vehicle onto the GSP to stop this from happening. Allegedly 911 took multiple calls regarding this wrong-way motorist.
Many things went horribly wrong in this crash, and answers will come when they’re actually answered.

He said she didn’t have a scratch on her but looked deceased. The cops showed up right after he got the door open and he left. The new info said she was DOA.. My wife and I was headed north on the parkway and was by mile marker 70 on our way home from Atlantic City. While driving in the middle lane of the NJ Parkway, when I noticed the car coming straight at us. My eyes almost popped at of my head. I quickly slowed down and went all the way to the right shoulder and the car with a lady in flew by us. Although, confused and worried for the vehicles behind us, I think we were in disbelief! Now, thinking back, we are so thankful to be here telling you our experience, but so heartbroken the vehicle/person they hit. I don’t know what could have been done to stop this person. Prayers for the families effected by this tragic event. ????????????

The NJ Parkway has us quite shocked up these last 2 days. On the way down to Atlantic City the night prior to today’s event, there was a vehicle that was flying with high speeds that lost control of their small white truck. It polwed in to the vehicle next to it and glass flew at my vehicle like the matrix as I was right behind them. Then the white truck sped away weaving in and out trying to get away. I don’t know the final outcome but left my info with the State Police as a witness. Smh….

Lauren Agnelli If speed was involved, let’s say 120 for easy math. You cover 30 miles in just 15 minutes. Take 5 minutes response time or less, then track down a fast moving target. Seems unbelievable, but you can see how its possible no one got to them to stop them.

This was a young girl clearly with a motivate that sadly took another innocent life. Prayers for all families involved and all who witnessed it and avoided it. I thankfully had an angel on my side that morning cause I was getting on parkway north to go home and got back on 72 then remembered I needed the bank so therefore got on in waretown.
