Barnegat (GSP): An earlier crash on the Garden State Parkway started off 2021 with tragic news. On the Parkway north, in the area of the 67 on-ramp for Parkway entrance is the scene of a grim crash scene this morning. The highway is closed to all traffic as the twice-fatal crash is being investigated.
The incident was believed to originate as a wrong-way driver causing a head-on crash. One vehicle was overturned on the roadway, with another catching fire to some extent. A total of three vehicles were possibly involved with an unknown amount of total patients. Patients were trapped in their vehicles, and NJSP, FD, EMS, and local Barnegat PD all rushed to the scene. Upon arrival it was determined that two patients were DOA, or fatalities.
Expect the Garden State Parkway North closed down to some degree as the fatal crash scene investigation begins. What a tragic way to begin 2021 on our Ocean County roadway.

Tim Reid apparently a car was traveling the wrong direction, so I don’t think the use of a cell phone was the problem
But you can not say for sure that the driver was not distracted or not paying attention and that is how they ended up in oncoming traffic. I drive that area all the time.

I just checked this all out on the map. They only way this could have happened, since someone reported they saw the driver at MM 71 is if the driver got on at the nearest entrance at 74 (Forked River) and drove 7 MILES the wrong way!!! or he purposely cut thru one of the many breaks between the median to get to the other side and made a right and went south in the northbound side. And at the very least, he drove 3 miles the wrong way. How did he not collide with anyone else if he drove 3-7 miles the wrong way?! This is all too bizarre and sad. Alcohol or dementia? ????

Beverly Reilly Ombres they were going too fast to have come from the rest area. If I was a 1/4 mile past the rest area, there is a bend and if I was in the middle lane, she would have hit me. I wouldn’t be able to see past the bend. Thank god I didn’t move over after getting on the parkway, cause she flew by me in the middle lane. That’s what I think happened by mm 67.
