BARNEGAT: New Jersey State Police have released few details in this morning’s double-fatal wrong-way crash. The crash was reported around 08:00 near Milepost 68.1. The wrong-way driver is reported as a 24 year old female, whom was found deceased at the scene. The other driver involved, seemingly the victim, is reported as a 64 year old Barnegat woman. Both victims were pronounced at the scene as per local radio traffic.
While this fatal accident is under investigation by the dedicated team at NJSP- we have learned a few things. There are numerous reports of other motorists swerving to avoid this 24 y/o driver between Interchange 81, going south. Some have claimed they witnessed the driver make an illegal U-Turn and head southbound in the northbound lanes. There were multiple calls to 911 also reported by each motorist who swerved for their lives. Other available neighboring law enforcement officers were requested to hop on the GSP to try to catch up with it. This was determined by other agencies assigning calls to units based off radio traffic.
By the time officials arrived, they discovered both occupants to be DOA. This tragic start to our roadways just seven hours into 2021.
We will publish a new story when more details are available, and/or facts are confirmed. In the meantime, hug your families more often. This could have been any of us today.

This is very sad. My question , which we will never have a answer for is, did the driver not know they were going the wrong way? She was seen by the Seaside exits driving south in the north bound lanes. Multiple people were honking at her trying to tell her she was going the wrong way.

The parkway is huge, and roads like route 37, lacey road and others can be a pain in the ass to navigate during morning commutes. 80mph for 13 miles equals 9 minutes and 45 seconds of time traveled. I think its kind of a stretch blaming law enforcement with only certain access points to get onto the parkway to intercept her.

Kenny Keiderling I make that trip 5 days a week. It averages 15 minutes for me during rush hour & I’m not traveling at break-neck speeds. The police are not psychic. They do not know in advance that someone is going to be putting lives at risk so that they can start heading that way before it happens. They cannot teleport from one place to another in a fraction of a second like on Star Trek. By the time someone called 911, they got a clear picture of what was going on, they notified the the towns along the way & NJSP & they got units heading toward the GSP it was just about over. How far away were the responding units? Were they supposed to risk their lives & the lives of others on the road to respond at excessive speeds? If they were involved in an accident while responding you’d be blaming them for driving too fast. The police cannot be everywhere every second.

I had a similar accident happen to me back in July. Driving a work van had an older lady on rt 35 drive the wrong way out of no where in middle of daylight on dry summer day.
It scared the shit of me. I somehow didn’t get killed. She was doing at least 50 plus heading at us head on driving the wrong way and I had no where to go. She was like a ping pong ball all over the road. I tried to say prayers as I thought I would gonna be dead and somehow just got t boned extremely hard. Totaled my van

NJ 35 might as be boardwalk bumper cars when it is two-lanes, one-way each direction. They keep adding DO NOT ENTER & WRONG WAY signs- but they don’t see. Something that echoes in my head is always something I hated hearing coming from my mother: you can be as careful as you want, sometimes it’s the other people you need to watch out for. I remember being so angry listening to her, like clearly I was in control of my own driving, and that would keep me safe. It’s only as I’ve grown older and had children of my own, that I understand what she meant. Something like this could have happened to any of us. Yes she was going the wrong way doing like 100 or better so scary straight down the middle Dan said everyone was going to the left and right he had to go in the grass to the right. So very sad and I thank god Dan is okay and everyone else that is safe and praying for all the families that were affected by this my heart goes out to them all.

Ocean County Scanner News if NJ ever did this, our tolls would go through the roof.
But its a smart warning system. There would need to be sensors on the parkway/turnpike detecting the flow of traffic too. Just to prevent someone from just turning around once they are already on the road.

As someone who works odd hours a later night wrong-way driver is one of my biggest fears.
Tommy Ganzenmuller i agree. I worked 3 jobs at one point to survive in nj and once I fell asleep behind the wheel on the way home and luckily I was on 34 and no one was around I hopped the round about went through the signs and just barely tapped the telephone pole.

Kinda obvious they were on something..js … If they had common sense about them they could have pulled over called the police and asked for help instead a major accident happened and lives were lost and if that accident didnt happen there who knows how far she would have got and how much worse it could have been!

Sadly, the innocent victim was going to meet her daughter 1/2 up the GSP to pick up her grandchildren for the weekend. A report said she was 61 yrs. old. Her poor family is heartbroken because of a selfish individual. ????
