Toms River: A desolate, quiet and calm downtown area as photographed on Christmas Day. Our downtown area here in Toms River is a really nice couple of blocks. We truly hope this district can be revitalized into a live-play-shop type of mixed use development. Downtown has been neglected for too long, and there’s so much more economic potential here. Oh, and someone needs to open a recreational marijuana dispensary downtown. It’s only fair since the town changed the rules to permit the brewery! ????

as long as it is redeveloped responsibly, with an eye to the ecosystem’s limitations, like the availability of potable water. huge apartment complexes are unsustainable. even smaller ones, for that matter.
Perhaps if they found a solution to parking it might. Some antique shops and galleries would be good additions; other than banks there is not much to draw folks there.
Not to sound pessimistic, but just like all the towns in Ocean County, it’s eventually going to be overpopulated, and over developed because no one votes down the members of congress who approve such things.
The demographic that has been slowly moving in from lakewood will ruin Toms River just like they ruined Lakewood unless everyone puts a stop to the over development.
The facts are facts no matter what you call it. And over population and development is one of the many reasons why more and more folks are moving out of NJ.
Steven Pacelli true
Steven Pacelli ALREADY is over populated
Amen
Steven Pacelli already there
Steven Pacelli very true seems like people ignore that fact like it won’t happen or something just as it’s happening to Jackson I saw that when I was a little kid I said to my mom they will take over one day knowone believed that
They got the brewery we can’t spend time in
Lakewood 2 will be pretty busy in the future.
Remember shopping there with my mom. Point Pleasant and Toms River were the only places other than Asbury Park. Such nice stores..miss that…and then the mall’s came
If they develop the area by Water Street the way it’s being discussed the downtown area will be a really nice place. They should also consider closing Washington St during the summer on Fridays and Saturdays full time for outdoor dining.
Redeveloped for Lakewood. Don’t be fooled, they don’t take over just part of a town.

Not entirely true…
Ocean County Scanner News not even remotely true.
I like the idea of closing Washington street on Friday and Saturday nights for dining. Let us just hope the thoughts of putting a homeless shelter in the area. It should be someplace better suited, not in the heart of town as some have suggested.
Oy vey!
Lakewood MO HILL wants to turn Toms River into Brooklyn 2.0
We are
$o very ble$$ed.
Paul Cobra
Devin Cooper smells like covid
Mom use to go to Harris and Woolworth’s was across the street. Just look everyday on Route 70 from New Hampshire Ave to Whitesville Rd what’s going up? Townhome after townhome! None of these mind you are for is regular Ocean County citizens either. Building a gigantic storage facility next to the WAWA on 70 next to where the flea market was and heard it’s strictly for the “Lakewood Community.”
Frank OHearn That’s not where the flea market was three sausage center is on same prooerty as Wawa. The First Market is etch to the east of that before Finished l Finnigans
Frank OHearn it’s the next property over.d
The flea market land is being cleared. Next to it is the storage units going up and next to that WAWA. Then the Lakewood community wants Vermont Ave to connect now. Are we missing a piece of land?
Notice in the write up it says “Low Income Housing To Built By Private Developers.” All of us know who those “Private Developers” are And who will claim to be “Low Income.” Completely And Utterly Disgusting!
Frank OHearn wtf is wrong with low income housing sorry not everyone is rich and can afford shit like everyone else maybe if the government gave a shit more and there were better paying jobs we wouldn’t need low income housing not everyone that’s on low income housing is on drugs or trying to take the easy way out there are so people out here that are trying to better their lives would you rather people be homeless
Cry all ya want but the system allows the scam.
Here come the LLC’s of Lakewood!!
Despite circulating news reports- Mayor Mo Hill & TR Council has not sold out the town to Jewish investors. The current administration is trying to compromise policy to benefit all TR residents. There is a heavy Hasidic Jewish population that lives in the northern part of town- and they vote!
It’s sad not to see it decked out for the holidays
Get rid of the Lakewood property scam investors buying shit up, then we will see quiet again
Well u do catch all kinds of junkies and release them to this area and they walk the streets like zombies looking for a Newport like it’s brains ????
Sounds like Mineola where I live, most places are vacant, and junkies and homeless everywhere. I’ve been to Downtown TR a few times didn’t seem as bad.
‘Revitalized’ sounds better than the actual realistic outcome.
You think that downtown is neglected come to Mineola,NY where I live 🙁
The parking is terrible
Southern takewood
Bayville was a beautiful safe town. Now ,go to ShopRite at 7pm. The drug deals in McDonald’s parking lot, in the ShopRite parking lot. People begging for money. Meanwhile 6 stores are hiring right in the area. Things are being stolen out of my yard. Just last week a van full of people decided to go to the bathroom on my neighbors lawn. That’s what every town is getting with the low income requirements. I believe that’s stopped but it’s not stopping them from over populating the towns. Traffic is horrendous too.
