The body found in a Pemberton Township cranberry bog on Wednesday is a 24-year-old man who has been missing for more than a week, a family friend said Thursday.

Pemberton Township police confirmed Thursday a body was discovered by workers in the Whitesbog section of town. Authorities will wait until an autopsy is complete to identify him and determine a cause of death.

Family friend Michelle Jackson, however, said Thursday that Matthew Nyhammer was found in an open area near a shed. Nyhammer was located about about a mile from the Whitesbog General Store, where we was last seen when his girlfriend dropped him off on Nov. 2.

Nyhammer’s family reported him missing the next day and began looking for him. Pemberton Township police as well as the State Park Police’s K-9 units searched the area repeatedly and State Police also deployed a helicopter to look for Nyhammer.

His bookbag was found in a wooded area near the store on Nov. 3, with his laptop, a hat and other personal items scattered about, Jackson said Tuesday.

The last call Nyhammer made was at 5:30 a.m. Nov. 3 to his girlfriend, Jackson said, adding that his phone apparently no longer has service.

State Police and State Park Police assisted Pemberton Township police at the scene on Wednesday.

Friends of the Nyhammer family have established a GoFundMe.com page to help cover his funeral expenses.
