Lakewood: Every year around this time we begin to see the stories and protests about the Jewish ritual of Kaparos. While the activity is spelled various ways, it goes down the same. Bingo in Lakewood was selling live chickens today for just $3.99, and we are hearing there were protestors there.

Like it or hate it, it is their right to practice their religion within the confines of the law. The tradition calls for gently holding a chicken around one’s head to symbolicly absorb one’s sins. The chicken is then slaughtered according to kosher law, and donated to charity. Addressing some comments above,
– a small minority of chickens are deemed non-Kosher once slaughtered due to health defects. Those are disposed of. I wish they’d be donated to a non-Kosher food pantry, but that that not happened yet.
-To those calling this practice babrbaric, most are hypocrites. If you have any idea how the chickens from your chicken dinner have been treated, you’d understand. Look it up on YouTube.
– Jewish law strictly prohibits cruelty to animals. Unfortunately, as some have commercialized the entire process, chickens are sometimes not given food or drink for extended periods during and after transport. This is wrong, and against Jewish law.

You’re not forced to practice a religion that makes no sense to you, and religious people can practice something that feels meaningful to them. It’s a win-win. I saw how the chickens were treated yesterday. They were in the same crates they are put into when taken to the poultry plant with the only different being that they were given a few minutes out of the crate for the ritual. You’re entitled to object to it and protest in a civil and sane manner. What you guys did yesterday wasn’t a peaceful protest but rather a disgusting display of anti-religious bigotry and preaching to Jews what you ignorantly think their religion states.

Though I don’t eat meat or dairy, or wear animal products, I don’t push my views on people or expect them to do the same. Simple physics and common sense…. of course your “sins will get transferred into a chicken when swung around over your head” …. it’s centrifugal force and inertia. Sometimes the chickens get scared and relieve themselves as they circle the repentant’s head though…. this is where the term “shithead” comes from. That’s not good luck when that happens though. There is a very real risk that the excremental-sins will now leech into the skull and dominate one’s thoughts. Should that happen, you’ll want to do crazy things like use the internet or let someone see your wife’s hair.
