WILSON, N.C. (WSET) — The man wanted for fatally shooting a 5-year-old in North Carolina has been arrested, police said. Wilson police identified the victim as Cannon Hinnant.
Police on Sunday said officers responding to a report of a shooting at a mobile home park found the 5-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound. Capt. Steve Stroud said officers and emergency personnel performed first aid before the boy was taken to Wilson Medical Center, where he died.
Police said 25-year-old Darius Nathaniel Sessoms was arrested Monday. He’s charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
According to The Wilson Times, Sessoms was found in a Goldsboro home Monday night, August 10.
A GoFundMe created for the Hinnant family shows Cannon was set to start kindergarten this year. It shows that Cannon was shot “point blank” while riding his bicycle Sunday afternoon.
“One minute he is enjoying his life, the next it all ends because he rode into his neighbors yard,” the GoFundMe reads.
A cousin for Cannon’s father created the fundraising campaign said she created it to help with funeral expenses and any help along the way for Cannon’s mother and father.

The whole nation stood together in solidarity for the senseless and tragic death of George Floyd. So I’m curious, how many will stand together in solidarity and demand justice for the senseless and tragic death of Cannon Hinnant? Did he not matter?
He was 5 years old. He was white. This past Sunday, he was riding his bike in front of his house and Darius Nathaniel Sessoms, a black male, walked up, put a gun to his head at point blank range, shot, and killed Cannon, while in front of his sisters.
A 5 year old white boy was shot and killed by a 27 year old black male, on purpose for no reason.
Did you read that? Did you hear about it on the news?
Why does one life matter so much it captures our Nation, but no one is talking about this? I don’t want to look away and I hope you can’t. I want to know why this little boy and this senseless death is not just as important?
Who is going to paint “Cannon” on the side of a building or on the streets? What National sports team is going to wear T-shirts with his name on them? Every single person should be demanding justice for Cannon, the little 5 year old boy who was killed for no reason, except for being white. How would this Country react if the roles were reversed? Cannon Hinnant was a purely innocent 5-year old little boy shot in the head, slaughtered point black by a soulless black criminal thug. George Floyd had a long violent criminal history who overdosed on fentanyl while being restrained by police. There is absolutely no comparison.

If someone, regardless of race, is being charged with something without being properly investigated than that’s an issue that affects everyone, and could potentially happen to you, me, or any other combination of folks. That’s an important issue that our civic leaders and legislative leaders need to rectify.
When it comes to destruction of property i think it’s important to try and see the other point of view. You grow up in a society that only just ended Jim Crow laws decades ago, law enforcement demonstrates a known bias against you, and statistically harsher penalties are issued for your group. So you elect to peacefully protest, and when one person steps out of line your entire group is condemned. Not to mention folks outside the argument are equating the loss of property to the loss of life due to both unjustifiable death and a loss of future prospects when entering the Justice system.

The whole point of the Justice system is that you’re taken into PROTECTIVE custody. That is to mean officers take the time to apprehend you, treat you as innocent until proven guilty, and then given a trial. The lives of the officers in question weren’t in jeopardy, they made a clear decision to murder this man for 8 agonizing minutes.
No one was mislead. The only thing that’s abundantly clear is that this type of murder could happen to anyone based on what officer they encounter, what mood said officer is in, and there are clear biases in how officers are not called to answer for these murders. At the very least they should be facing harsher punishments for breaking the laws they swear to uphold.
