The County department of health would have contact traced back to the diner. Even further, why haven’t we ever worn masks in general public for other viruses? Or shut down the entire economy and businesses, schools etc, etc? This virus, why yes it is real and has killed people, it is approximate a 1% lethal death rate. (Don’t hold me to the exact numbers), but it’s a much lower rate than many viruses and diseases.
Another point to make this current strain was developed in a lab in Wuhan, China. Which nothing was able to stop the spread, what makes anyone think that a simple mask or covering will? Of course there’s better protection than the simple masks, but they aren’t be used by the vast majority of people.

Paula Cole Thanks. I watched the first 30 minutes. Then a little of the 2nd and read the article. I like a lot of what he said, and you were right, EOs are not laws. One of the interesting points was the way the executives can manipulate the system to make them effectively the same (funding and/or inspections).
The article talked about the wide powers that NJ gives the governor in times of emergency. We are clearly on different sides of how to best manage this for the people of NJ.
Even with the stay at home EO, nobody was quarantined at home. There were allowances to go out, and ‘essential’ businesses were allowed to be open. I’m on board with some mandates for the greater good of society, including protecting contagion spread. I don’t think the economy will rebound until a lot more people feel safe.

I don’t think felons should be released. On an unrelated note, I do think some of our laws relating to marijuana need to be revisited and/or the way they are enforced. but that’s another discussion for another day.
I’d have to check with Corrections Officers, but I would imagine the jails are a much easier place to get compliance, and keep people separated. The idea that prison wasn’t safe, but nursing homes were is baffling.
What was the last pandemic that shuttered the world? This one is different, I’m not a scientist, but I do believe the majority. We’ve done a great job eliminating the deadliest ones through containment and/or vaccines, and with testing and tracing putting out hot spots has been much easier. We’re not there yet with this one. Even without a vaccine, we need lower numbers of people that are infected, better testing and contact tracing to lower the rate of transmission.
The masks have been common in some Asian countries for people that think they might be sick with the common cold. It’s a courtesy to limit the chances of infecting others. Much like a seat belt limits the injuries in cars.
There are a few things that have caused more than 150,000 deaths a year in the US. We’re not even a year into it. Cancer and heart disease are around 600-650,000 each and they are not contagious.
The precautions, including masks and social distancing are meant to slow the spread. That leads to containment (testing, tracing). Flatten the curve was working, then some people got fatigued and let up.
These are preventable deaths. We had Ebola and Sars in the US. No deaths from Sars and less than 20 people in the US ever had it.
