A Lakewood Rabbi wrote us to explain what is with the fires tonight and normally for this holiday. However, residents were asked not to partake this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. What we heard come over the radio were the few who didn’t listen to the rules.
“Whats happening tonight is that it is a small holiday, where this day every year every neighborhood and every school make a huge bonfire, usually everyone has permits from the fire marshall etc. However this year they said to make that there will be no crowds they are not giving permits, now a few bad apples decided they dont care, and they’re gonna do it anyways, which I agree they are wrong. However understand this fire is in memory of a holy saint from many hundreds of years ago and there are many fires next to his grave in Israel and MANY MANY Jews go up there every year and that is the reason behind this.”
Okay, but this isnt Israel. Doesn’t matter how long the saint has been dead. Folks have been violating orders from the get go, there aren’t any more excuses. The numbers speak for themselves… while yes, we may be on the downward slope, that absolutely does not mean go ahead and do what you want.

Ken Freile maybe because they knew this was bullshit from day 1. They have continued to live as normal, it spread through their community, most of them are just fine, very few elderly passed from it, like any other virus. They behaved liked many other countries and it worked just fine. Science is confirming masks and social distancing and quarantines have not stopped the spread. It’s exactly the same. Time to open up. But who said theyre right, noone, but take a moment to realize this, this past night in lakewood there are usually close to 100 fires taking place and today closer to 500, so when there were only 3 fires last night, thats saying something, so yes you dont want to hear this but its a FEW BAD APPLES, and you know what, every religion has them! Does anyone recall every year having fires this day? Its part of a mini holiday, now its not a halachic or torah commandment that you have to make fires however there is a source and thats why every year they did it, the reason there is a big deal about it isbecause this year the fire marshall decided that to male that there are no crowds and no dancing by fires theyre not giving permits. Daniella Lund My husband passed away unexpectedly 2 weeks ago from a heart attack and we were only able to have our immediate family at a private viewing; we could have tried to work around it and only have 10 people at a time by invitation only but my conscience would not even consider taking the chance of someone getting sick. I couldn’t live with myself if that happened. Hopefully we can gather to celebrate his life in the summer if things ease up but I guess these people have no conscience and just don’t care about the community.
