PRESS RELEASE-OCEAN COUNTY PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE INVESTIGATING YOUTUBE VIDEO
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Unit and Special Victims Unit are currently investigating the authenticity of a video that was posted on YouTube on March 1, 2020. The video depicts an adult male seemingly attempting to solicit a 14 year-old for sexual relations, when in reality it was an adult posing as the minor. This video was created by a private citizen with no law enforcement involvement. This is an active and ongoing investigation.
Prosecutor Billhimer reminds the public that any investigation into criminal activity should be left to law enforcement professionals. “Investigations into alleged criminal activity must be conducted by trained law enforcement officials — with the assistance of members of the public when and where appropriate. Private citizens who take it upon themselves to investigate what they believe to be criminal conduct may compromise the potential investigation. They can also find themselves in a very dangerous situation. Please leave criminal investigations to the professionals,” Prosecutor Billhimer stated.

Ocean County Scanner News I know it may be the unpopular opinion, but I think it’s best to be one or the other, not try for both. Either:
1. Do your homemade “stings”, post for YouTube views, and publicly shame if possible
Or
2. Law enforcement conducts sting operations with relatively few details beyond names and charges released.

In theory, in most states, thinking YOU are communicating with a minor is sufficient for the crime, similar to police setting you up for a drug buy with fake drugs. Doesn’t matter if the heroin was real, YOU thought it was, so it’s the “same”

Robb Smith I’m understanding it that the police were only notified by viewers of the video. Not by the maker of the video. I would have felt if he contacted police he wanted to help. But this comes across like he did it for views and followers and the viewers were the ones reporting it.

This might be an unpopular opinion…but does anyone else feel this guy did this so he can get his 15 minutes of fame? I can’t imagine how many other people are going to do this just for the sake of being popular on social media. This was an extremely dangerous situation he put himself in. Not saying I’m not glad the perv was caught, but it could have turned out way differently if this guy had a weapon or was violent.
Abby Daw I was thinking something similar….that it is fantastic if this is legitimate and the perp was caught. However, this should be a “do not try this at home” situation and maybe there should be a slap on the wrist for the man who made the video just to discourage others from attempting this (for their own safety). Not all perv perps will be quietly accepting of someone trapping them and videotaping them. In fact, I would guess that most would not be.
