A New Jersey school bus driver with a suspended license abandoned a bus full of children outside her home last week after instructing an attendant to “handle these kids yourself,” according to reports.
Newark police found 14 students abandoned on a school bus around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 after receiving several calls from concerned parents that the bus missed designated stops, WABC reported.
None of the children was injured but one 11-year-old girl with special needs told the station Wednesday that the driver, who has not been identified, just left.
“She told the bus attendant that you gonna have to handle these kids yourself,” Amber Easterling said.
Police took the children to a nearby precinct where parents picked them up and the driver was issued a summons for operating a vehicle with a suspended license, WABC reported.
A statement from Newark Public Schools obtained by the station said the bus company’s contract was canceled.
“The District has removed this vendor from transporting students to Avon Avenue School and is in the process of determining next steps regarding future services. In addition, because established guidelines were not adhered to, the District has also imposed liquated financial damages for this infraction. This continues to be an active investigation.”

Question.. from the statement, I would use deductive reasoning to conclude that the children were being unruly. That fact aside.. she should not have been driving with suspended license.

Many feel bus drivers should be instructed not to let kids off the bus unless there is a parent or guardian waiting for them or to wait until they are safely in the front door. In my neighborhood, they do that. Poor baby’s body was found yesterday.

Some folks feel if the bus driver policy was to keep her on the bus and bring her back to the school (like they do in my neighborhood) they could have called the parents and had them come and get her- she would be alive today. The guy that abducted her had to have seen her as “the perfect target”. Latch-key kid with no adult supervision.

The article only says one special needs student. The suspended licenses might have happened after the driver was hired and the school never knew about it.
I used to drive a group of kids on a small bus from Perth Amboy to Bloomfield every day to an alternative school for troubled kids. They ranged in age from 5-16. I could not keep an aide, they all quit. The kids would fist fight, roll down the isle while I was driving, hang their bare behinds out the window, curse, and much more. I’d pull over on the parkway, have state police come aboard. The kids would laugh at them, give them the middle finger. Nothing was ever done. “Write them up” was what I was told. Finally, thought they had found the perfect aide for me, a retired juvenile detective! Until that is, I look in my overhead mirror to see he had a student in a choke hold! He didn’t last either. So my point is, unless you have driven these “special needs” kids, you don’t have a clue as to how hard our job is. Be responsible for getting these “kids” to school safely while dealing with these behaviors. Not easy. I don’t agree with what this driver did by any means but I certainly understand their frustration.

I don’t miss those days at all. The company I worked for is not longer in business. They used to be in Bayville and did these Special Needs runs. Couldn’t keep aides either for the very same reasons and so called remedies.
