One person was killed and another resident injured in an overnight fire in Ocean Grove that forced the evacuation of several nearby homes, authorities said.

The extent of that person’s injuries isn’t know, a spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said. Two emergency responders were also treated for minor injuries.

Broadway in the Ocean Grove section of Neptune Township was closed in both directions as emergency workers remain on the scene early Thursday, hours after the fire broke out at a home near the corner of Central Avenue shortly before 2 a.m., officials said.

The fire is not considered suspicious, though an investigation into its cause is ongoing, the prosecutor’s office said. The identity of the victim was not available, pending family notification.

Neptune Township fire company that helped fight the fire said on Facebook, “We extend our thoughts and prayers to the fire victims and everyone involved.”

The New Jersey chapter of the Red Cross said it was assisting four people displaced by the fire with temporary housing.
