BRICK – A pedestrian was struck and killed while crossing Herbertsville Road yesterday, police said.

On Jan. 13, at approximately 6 p.m., two men were walking along the northbound shoulder of Herbertsville Road near Havens Farm, 521 Herbertsville Road, when the incident occurred.

A white 2013 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling south on Herbertsville Road near the pedestrians when both men attempted to cross the roadway to the west side to beat the oncoming traffic, police said. While one of the men made it across safely, the other, a 51-year old Brick man, was struck by the Volkswagen. Following the impact, the vehicle ran off the roadway into the wooded area near the entrance to Havens Farm.

A passerby and the driver of the Volkswagen, a 26-year old female, attempted CPR on the fallen pedestrian until police and first aid arrived on the scene.

According to police, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office, Sheriff Department’s, and Criminal Investigation Unit responded to the scene.

Traffic in the area was detoured for about two hours while police conducted their investigation at the scene. An ongoing investigation is being conducted by Ptl. Thergesen and Ptl. Farnkopf of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
