Dont really think many of us will wanna relive this total diaster only to return to what we called home that was no longer there after being in a hotels for months
Robb Smith for sure.
Barbara Sigley Silva ik every year when the pics pop up as memories i just gringe.. I was placed into a shelter for 30 days then a 3 different hotels for a total of 5 months.. There was no rentals around close enough to my family and by the time my fema check came thru it was to late everything was takening up.. 4 months of hell lost 75% of everything i had.. I deff dont wanna remember this shit..
Or a friend’s spare room. Those friends were a Godsend but good times were not had by all ? that’s the last time I had a savings. We never really recovered ?
Hear ya…my story is long but eventually lost our home in toms river and my sanity. Rented our home to my son. It was awful. Had flood ins took us 5 months to make it habital again. After much money and fixing it back up. Told 2 years later we had to raise. Couldnt get help cause not our primary residence. My kids, mother and father in law took refuge with us 5 months. Mom and pop lost their home on ss bay. Thank God all were alive. Again long story. I get anxiety thinking back and whenever a nor easter is coming. We walked away after all this. We did so much to rebuild it
Steph VanPelt same here.. I had alot saved things were going great for me and then sandy came and out to the ocean it went all of it
I thought this was called “super storm”
Debbie Jarmolinski both Superstorm and Hurricane have been used to describe Sandy 🙁
Tree branches flew into my car.
Had to fight insurance. They didn’t want to pay bc it was labeled a superstorm?
I’m sorry ?
Debbie Jarmolinski it was both, at different stages.
Ocean County Scanner News really wasnt a huricane was classed as tropical storm
We had no power,i remember my daughter cooking grits and eggs on the charcoal grill
Geri Ugaro Grills were for sure so helpful 🙂
Ocean County Scanner News yup
They never classified it as a hurricane. Not sure why they never did.
Michael Kiser it was a hurricane before it was a superstorm. Or so I thought.
Steph VanPelt yeah but for some reason when it made the turn to jersey they called it a super storm. Either way it was terrible.
Michael Kiser sustained winds and storm surge conditions, if I recall correctly, are what led to that categorization. And then there’s the insurance-company-weather-service conspiracy theory, to which I react, ?♀️
Michael Kiser so we can collect for damages from our insurance companies
The storm went into Atlantic city as a cat 1 so it was a hurricane
Michael Kiser it was a hurricane, it was downgraded just before it hit the NJ coastline, which was actually good for people because their insurance would have had larger deductibles.
Christopher Gaffney it was not classified as a hurricane! It was a Superstorm! Trust me, it was a fight with some insurance companies because of that.
Marni Peterson Kociban it actually hurt alot of people too being called a superstorm.
Kim Nylander-Flannery how? I know my insurance had a larger deductible for a hurricane. Technically there is no “superstorm” in the insurance industry, as far as I know.
Marni Peterson Kociban some had to fight to get their flood and homeowners insurance to cover anything because of it being called a superstorm rather than a hurricane. Deductible aside.
Kim Nylander-Flannery that’s weird. Mine made it easier. Insurance companies are such a pain in the ass.
Marni Peterson Kociban I lost my home in that storm. Believe me, it was an issue. Lol. And yes they are a p.i.a.!!! ?
Kim Nylander-Flannery my flood insurance company was so cooperative, everything went through quickly, no arguements. The homeowners insurance was ridiculous. They only wanted to pay for the front of the roof and a third of the value of that, had to fight for everything. I can only imagine what other people went (and are still going) through.
Kim Nylander-Flannery I know. I have friends still in rentals. Sadly, one got cancer and just passed away after fighting for years, never did get back into her house. I’m sure the stress didn’t help. Now her son is continuing the fight to rebuild. ?
Marni Peterson Kociban that’s very sad.
Kim Nylander-Flannery very ?
Kim Nylander-Flannery a storm can be a tropical depressing, a storm, a supper storm and a hurricane during it’s ‘life time’. Depending on the wind speeds and where it is at the time.
Furring Sandy we had if I remember correctly a supper moon, high tides and sustained storm surge that prevented flood waters from draining when Sandy made land fall as a supper storm.
I may be wrong a year after Sandy from all the stress and strain of loosing everything o had a series of TIA’s and lost some memories
Lyn Gomez I’m not disagreeing about that. But being called a superstorm and not a hurricane was a problem. Maybe not for everyone but for some.
Kim Nylander-Flannery it all depends on it’s classification and the insurance.
I was a Sandy victim, that could get no help.
I lived in Seaside Heights, I rented everything I owned except family photos and 2 suitcases of clothing where lost.
My landlord had shit off the utilities while I was in Florida to care for my father after a hospitalization (stroke). I literally was scheduled to fly back in the day Sandy happened. Science I was out of state and the utilities where off I was not considered a Sandy victim at all. I was not even allowed to come and try to see if anything survived the storm, even though the house was still standing in one piece.
Trust me I understand the technical problems that storm caused many
Lyn Gomez it was horrible all around. Sorry to hear. For me I’m speaking as a homeowner and what we dealt with.
Kim Nylander-Flannery having to rebuild your life is hard at any time, never mind when the government sticks thier nose in
This was my house, 5 1/2 ft of water in it and tons of sand. We lost everything.
My goodness I am so sorry for your loss. Did you rebuild?
Ocean County Scanner News we were renting at the time. My landlord fixed it but didn’t raise the house so we chose to not go back plus my kids were so scared to live near the ocean again so we moved inland.
Beverly Rodriguez that is understandable
Beverly Rodriguez was Joe your landlord?
Jessica Rasmussen yes!
And so many towns have parts not fixed like waretown , and on lbi, and a few in ocean gate for example
Scott A Barnes seaside heights too
My house, pic taken by a neighbor two days after the storm. The water came up to the car window at it’s highest point.
Matt Rusiński oh my goodness. What town is this?
Toms River, as bad as this was, it pales in comparison with what im dealing with with FEMA still 7 years later.
Matt Rusiński no resolution still?
That’s outrageous
Yup, clawbacks are currently frozon by the Murphy administration but the fed government is asking people to return money “granted” after the hurricane to help people who were displaced, thousands of dollars.
Matt Rusiński sounds like such a mess 🙁
Matt Rusiński
I remember rescuing Kyle.
Paul Kahn Jr. yea that sucked
Here’s another one

Kids were out of school for a week. We used the library often to use the WiFi. Ours was not working well at home.
Wow… I was only 9. I remember seeing LBI a couple weeks after Sandy Hit and just thinking how it looked so fake. Can’t believe it’s been 7 years.
Haydn Dailey went by so quickly
The thing that bothered me the most was the morning after the storm. We were just trying to assess the damage on my house (inside and outside), there was still water dripping into my house from the attic, and there was some chick knocking on my door with her fake empathy trying to get business for her boss. The neighborhood wasn’t accessible AT ALL by any vehicle because trees were everywhere but this woman thought it wise to wonder around knocking on doors to drum up business. ?
Stacie Duffy so sad….
This storm/hurricane brought the best out of people but the worst out of some 🙁
Ocean County Scanner News there was a mom who sent in a note to be distributed to my son’s class letting parents know that her home was open to anyone who needed somewhere to wash clothes, charge electronics or just have a home cooked meal. ❤️. I’ll never forget seeing that note in my son’s backpack.
Stacie Duffy what an absolutely beautiful story, reminds us of the great people in this world ❤
Not as bad as others had 5 feet in back yard from township tide creek , took out shed and everything in it air conditioning, water in crawl space, have township drainage easement which is full of tree roots. No electric for 17-21 days no internet. Bought generator to help heat house for husband. Now we have whole generator not taking any chances.
Terrible memories ?
Freezing. Being in a house that had lots of condensation and my son was only 6 at the time. We bounced from house to house just to stay warm. But it’s nothing in comparison to having clients who had lost just about everything. Seeing them go through YEARS of trying to recover themselves was way worse than our 10 days of freezing and warm house hunting.
Forked River. Tore it down and built a new one.
I was mantolokings beat reporter for a local paper so that became a round the clock job. I also lived in Belmar and this was the boardwalk post-sandy. While many ppl stayed home in the weeks following sandy, the news doesn’t sleep. Belmar went without electric for quite some time so I lived out of a suitcase jumping from friend to friends house to get a hot shower n dry my hair and enjoy some heat n occasional alcoholic beverage lol. I left the news business the next year to work in the beauty/cosmetology industry but ‘ll never forget those cold, dark days
We had 4 adults 4 pets and got out just before it flooded our house at 10:45 pm
other neighbors went to bed and were stepping in water in there house when they woke up next day
It was bad. no question about it. but how many of us realize that the next one is going to be even worse? the unchecked overdevelopment all over ocean county, especially to the north and west, is going to flood the back bay 150% worse than it was during sandy. where does 150% come from? the increase in impervious surface SINCE sandy. we are going to need an ark.
The storm was manipulated by NEXRADs……sadly the world we live in….
Before.
After.
During. Low tide, 1:30 pm October 29, 2012.
Kevin Karlick omg you guys stayed.. I can’t even believe I’m scrolling threw here to see the side of my house.
My view down Fielder Ave in Ortley the day after.
Our neighbors literally saved our butts while we waited for electricity! I wish I could pay their water bill for the month once a year ☺️
Long road for you guys. Glad you could rebuild.
Living in Ortley Beach, really didn’t think we would have any problems with Sandy. My biggest fear was while we were all evacuated, thieves would come and steal all our stuff..lol. We could have done so much better to prepare had we know it was going to be that bad.. Only had a couple days of clothes.. It seemed like forever till we where finally able to come look at our homes.. Once inside I was in shock. The fridge had fallen forward, dressers were tipped over. Our coffee table had clearly been floating around the house because the remote was still on it with a magazine that hadn’t gotten wet.. it smelled so bad. My neighbors deck was in our backyard.. The front door clearly shows the water line, of how much water was inside.
The morning after on the Tom’s River.
