Clayton Whitcraft they say they’re donated to charity for food which is a lie. A simple search shows tons pics of dead chickens in black garbage bags and videos of them being thrown into garbage trucks. Sickening.
The odd part is that it is more than just “tradition”. As I understand it, giving them to charity is part of the atonement process. This brings up a big question- Were these chickens used in the ritual or were they surplus “unused” chickens? If they were used in the Kapparot ritual and subsequently not butchered and donated to the poor, then what becomes of the Atonement status of the people who partook in the ritual? Is their atonement now negated in the eyes of Hashem? Either way, I suspect that the organizers of this particular Kapparot site now have even more to atone for.

Question from a non-Jew: How does the Kapparot ritual work, anyway? I’ve heard it described as a transfer of sins from the person to a chicken which is, subsequently, supposed to be butchered and donated to the poor to be eaten at the pre-Yom Kippur meal. If, however, “sin” is indeed transferable, then what prevents the sin in the chicken from being transferred to the person consuming it? Is sin something like Salmonella in that it should not be an issue provided the chicken is cooked completely? I’m genuinely curious as to how this works.
