TOMS RIVER – In the midst of the ongoing “vaping crisis,” as some media outlets are calling it, Ocean County Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari is calling on state lawmakers to ban vaping for the dangers it poses to children.
“As a lifelong educator, I see a growing problem with underage vaping in our schools and communities,” said Vicari, former educator in the Berkley Township School District. “These electronic cigarettes come in fruit and candy flavors that are obviously targeting our children.”
Vicari said he would support legislation proposed by state Senator Steven Sweeny that would ban outright the sale of vaping products.
“Manufacturers are combining sweet flavors with nicotine in an effort to get young people hooked,” he said. “We need to cut off this problem now.”
The NY Post and CNN are just a few that have coined the recent slew of illnesses and half-a-dozen deaths associated with the devices, the “vaping crisis.” Not only this, but President Trump has also called for a nationwide ban following the reported deaths.
The CDC reports that over 450 vaping-related illnesses have been reported in 33 states so far.
Hopkinsmedicine.org claims that vaping exposes users to nicotine and other potentially hazardous compounds.
“While the law currently bans the sale of vaping products to those under the age of 18, vapes are easily available online,” Vicari said. “This is a growing problem that is only going to get worse if we do not act.”
Children who might never have picked up a traditional cigarette are getting hooked on vaping products, which contain a much higher concentration of nicotine than tobacco cigarettes.
“Lives are at risk. We need to protect our children,” said Vicari. “E-cigarettes have never received Food and Drug Administration approval as devices that help smokers quit,” he added.
They would MUCH rather you smoke cancer causing cigarettes and become a junkie shooting heroin into your veins…..Too much money to be made in cancer, chemo and narcan…..
Or you could not smoke either…just a thought…
Eleanor Halsey Or you could mind your own business and stop telling people what they can or can’t do based on what you choose to do or not do. So if you do something I don’t like should it be banned because I don’t like it so you can’t do it either?? That’s what wrong with this country these days….
What a load of bulls***. More people will die from opiod abuse by the time I finish writing this comment than have ever died from vaping. Big Tobacco is spending millions on the campaign to ban vaping- they are 100% behind this “initiative”. What would you do if they came after alcohol, which is 1000 times more dangerous than vaping? Goddamn it people, stop trying to ban everything you don’t do.
Rick …..”more people will die from opioid abuse by the time I finish writing this comment…”. That’s real right there!
Loosing my business is going to be a tough pill to swallow. Met alot of great people along the way.
The tobacco lobby has too much money on their hands.
Can Ocean County officials ban heroin next?
And cigarrettes, those come in flavors too, and flavored alcohol, both of which kill half a million people a year…..but naaaahhhhhhh….They’re making too much money off those killers
just so you people know … https://www.healio.com/pediatrics/adolescent-medicine/news/online/%7B86eaf864-1e60-406d-9b81-ea1dccbadbc1%7D/phillip-morris-parent-company-invests-128b-in-juul
Stupid is as stupid does. Hope they like the lost tax revenue from all the small mom and pop vape shops who abide by the law and don’t sell to people under 18 when they close their doors! Sheeple!
Hope they also ban the black market carts for the juuls that contain THC and god knows what which is what is getting some people sick….but yeah ban vaping entirely because that’ll fix the black market thc right up, just like making heroin illegal stopped the junkies from overdosing on tainted heroin SMFH
Ridiculous!
With all the glamorizing all these stores flashy signs it’s creating death
LOL- you mean like liquor stores?
Everything
lmao are they banning fruity flavored alcohol? aka the only substance you can die because of withdrawal from? nah. are they banning cigarettes? nah. but a couple of morons with pre existing health conditions dying after buying THC cartridges off wish.com means every gas stations gotta stop selling juul pods and vape juice? ?? ok
Martin Brown wish.com lmfao. ??
People get fat from too much ice cream. So we invent low fat ice cream. A couple people get fat from low fat ice cream. Everybody bans the low fat ice cream but not the regular ice cream.
But really..
Cigarettes kill thousands, so we invent something that’s 95% less harmful.. Vaping. A handful die from vaping so we immediately ban…. Vaping.
You guys see how none of this makes sense right?
$
Because only kids and teens like flavors! ?
I vape, so does my mother for the past 7 years… They had zero problem with us smoking nor my dad dying from lung cancer from smoking along with millions of other people… Now that big tobacco sees they can profit from both contributing to health problems AND a safer solution they want to corner the market totally… Tide pods have caused more deaths, why aren’t they banned??
I have several friends in the business, in PA they put a floor tax of 30%, advocates helped them out… Another in South Jersey had the first FDA approved lab, which she spent a fortune on, label changes so that kids aren’t “attracted” to it, higher tax on nicotine, and the list goes on… The took Mom and Pop shops that follow the rules and nickel and dimed them to death… Ban flavors and home brewing will take off, people are already stocking up on supplies, there people who don’t know how deadly straight nicotine is(very), black market ejuice with God knows what in it made by God knows who… It’s bad all around… These kids are using Juul, I see them in the mall, the middle of the damn mall using them, those are convenience stores selling them to them, responsible shop owners know better and knows what’s at stake… We should’ve followed Alaska’s lead a long time ago, they took it totally out of the tobacco catagory… Sorry for the rant, it pisses me off .. want flavored alcohol? Great, flavored cigarellos? Check… Flavored cartridges from big tobacco? Here ya go… But flavored ejuice? Nope, that might attract kids.?
Don’t forget about the dumb ass father suing because he bought his 14 yr old kid a juul and is complaining that his kid is now addicted to nicotine!!

Ban vaping what? The medical marijuana dispensaries sell THC vape cartridges. Some patients prefer that as opposed to rolling joints, etc. How will the law enforcers differentiate between THC carts & nicotine carts?
They can test it. Either roadside or by sending it off to the lab.
Yes ban vaping. Even though a children’s hospital and the cdc have a list of companies and products that are the cause. But fuck it ban it all. Politicians and tobacco companies are losing money so let’s take action and ban something that they don’t like. Even though positions supported it when it started coming out because it was cutting the tobacco revenue. But then those same politicians are now getting paid big bucks from theses companies to ban vaping. The government and big companies are scared of a safe alternative. That’s also why they haven’t legalized marijuana. It’s a safe alternative that will take away from big pharma and politicians who support them.
Ban politicians. Cogsuggas.
Hmm. Yes, because banning alcohol in the 1920s worked out great…
More knee jerk bureaucratic bullshit.
Welcome to New Jersey where everything’s illegal
Dan Platt
And vaping is worse?? Its meant to help smokers quit or choose a safer alternative. Juul is marketed to children. The small concealed vapes are a problem.

Next on the agenda . . . . .walking across the street.
Many pedestrians are killed daily crossing the street so all in favor of banning crossing the street say AYE.

Ban alcohol.
The cigarette companies have to be paying for this somehow ??♀️
This actually works to get you off the cigarettes and they don’t like it one bit.
Millions of people die of tobacco related disease, crickets,, less than a dozen from vaping… FOLLOW THE MONEY
6 out of Millions is hardly a crisis ?♀️
How about ban politicians!
