TOMS RIVER – A fire broke out in the early morning hours Friday at 646 Brookside Drive home.
Toms River officials said fire companies Nos. 1 and 2 responded at 1:47 a.m. to the working structure fire at 646 Brookside Drive.
Those companies, along with Silverton Fire Company, Pleasant Plains Fire Company and Island Heights Fire Company, had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes.
Crews rescued a mother and two children from the blaze. Lt. Robert Krohn and firefighter Nick Cirz also saved a cat and dog from the house.
Working smoke alarms alerted the family to the fire, allowing them to evacuate safely, officials said.
The Toms River Township Fire Prevention Bureau and the Toms River Police Department is investigating.
So did the occupants need to be rescued or did they evacuate safely? The article tells two different stories.

Nice catch, I think the family evacuated on their own. The firemen rescued the pets.
Nick C. is a regular fan here, maybe he can clarify?
So they left their pets behind for the firemen to rescue?
Tim Reid
That’s how I’m understanding it?
