Trenton: Happy July 1 to everyone! Effective today the state minimum wage rises to $10 per hour. This is part of Governor Murphy`s plan for wages to reach $15 per hour. Each year the wage rises $1 until it magically makes it to $15.
Now the price of everything else will likely rise as this will be passed on to consumers.
Still means too many places will not hire full time
Scott Barnes they won’t be hiring at all.
Donna Fusilli Hack jobs are scarce but there is no proof raising to ten will hurt local. I am meaning the big businesses.
Places are already paying that or more.
Great now I can afford a double cheeseburger haha
That means most of your fast food franchises will go to kiosk. They won’t hire cashiers and only hire bare minimal staff
John Degroat that was happening before the wage was raised.
I reckon I need to get out more
I noticed shoprite took away the express lanes and made them self checkout
Oh stop!! $10 an hour wont kill anyone.
Andrew Schroeder lmfao. When you take all the risk , put up your own capital and provide jobs , then comment. Otherwise stfu
Laura Schneider Lange Because people don’t deserve to make an honest wage… right? Go get back on your knees and STFU.
Andrew Schroeder hey that’s not nice, I agreed with you right up to you using a disgusting word. Not nice
Andrew Schroeder this wage increase is going to extremely hurt small businesses and if going to prevent other small businesses to open with a staff
Not $1.15 wont hurt anyone. Now $15 is a lil excessive.
People do deserve to make an honest wage, but what about those who get a single check monthly such as on Social Security retirement. We don’t get benefit wage increases yearly. Costs have risen $1. or more per item than the year before since 2016. So everything bought in NJ goes up. The more bought, higher the tax paid for the privilege of living in NJ.
Now I believe everyone deserves a decent wage but a $1.15 raise for 1 employee is not so bad but if you have 9 employees the raise increase for a full time staff is a little over $400 a week and about $21,000 a year. That in the long run is a chunk of change for a small business trying to survive. It will trikle down to the consumer.
Donna Ruehle Ziolkowski you didn’t take into consideration payroll tax ! Factor that in and see what the price really is ! The state doesn’t care about employees it’s what they can tax on it to bring in more money !
10$ wont I agree but 15$ will hurt small business
Andrew Schroeder it iant just 1.15
Everything increases. Employer taxes for their employees increase as well.
Goods and services as well.
I support a living wage but I dont support over paying menial labor. Fast food employees cashiers ot any min wage jobs should not get paid this much($15)
Also those that do not make minimum wage are not receiving raises commensurate to the minimum wage increase.
If min dollar per hour goes up 6 dollars then my hourly rate deserves to go up as such.
So when your paying 8 to 10 dollars for a burger you know why
Shady posting the picture of McDonalds.
Why is everyone bitching and being so damn neg it’s better than what min is now smdh
Jay Capasso wow. You must be a brain surgeon
Laura Schneider Lange no actually I’m not ??‍♂️
Laura Schneider Lange $10 an hour is a huge thing ??‍♀️ go ahead and be a bitch about minimum wage going up, while the rest of us appreciate it.
Please it’s $10 people you still can’t survive on that. Everyone screams about public assistance but when they are forcing companies to pay a fair wage for people to survive and support themselves you cry about that too which is it
Caroline Lopez Many simple folks can’t grasp this.
I don’t see an issue with this. They are slowly raising the minimum wage, and putting more responsibility on those they do retain. I was in a McDonalds for the first time in ages. They had an employee that was in charge of the dining area. She was personable, had sticker books for the kids and kept it clean. There was one person working the counter.
Kayleen Hernandez ?
The people that are complaining wouldn’t work for 10
Nice condescending photo of McDonald’s. Has it occurred to you that many disabled workers go to McDonald’s since they are willing to work with the limited skill set a person may have. Why shouldn’t these individuals make a living wage (by the way in NJ $10 isn’t anywhere near a livable wage.)
Ryan Byrne exactly. The Republican Party has sold folks this idea…that no one deserves “$15 dollars for flipping burgers” … Meanwhile the reality is many folks with masters degrees are making minimum wage… Unfair wages do not just affect the “unskilled worker”
I agree you can even afford to live even at 10 per hour. Rent in NJ is crazy to the point who could live in a nice house here
Kristen Sawyer you just don’t get it……
Wasn’t minimum wage like $9.50?
Makenzie Widman it was $8 something, places like Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonalds always only paid minimum wage because it’s illegal to pay less than so
Makenzie Widman nah I think it was like 8.65 or something around there
Angela Rose Bird that’s crazy, Who could live off that though!
Makenzie Widman good question!!
It was $8.85
Arianne Faust
I could see complaining if it went right to 15. But raising it over the course of several years should be happening anyway. Are you trying to say the minimum wage should never go up?
Most places were paying 10 and up .
People who support a $15 minimum wage always talk about McDonald’s and Walmart and big companies that can easily afford to pay their employees more and are thus easy to demonize. There is a reason they do this- to draw attention away from how much that will crush small businesses. What I say to them is that I hope you like eating at McDonald’s and shopping at Walmart because if small businesses are forced to pay that much to their employees those will be the only places left to go.
Rick Sharp not to mention that plenty of these establishments are already significantly cutting back on staff and replacing with kiosks. That crumby $5 Big Mac will soon cost you $8 !
Good point, but the kiosks were coming anyway. Eventually the tech gets to the point where it’s cheaper than an employee even at current wage levels. If you have a job that can be done a machine, you should already be training to do something else.
The reason they are turning to robots or technology instead of an employee? So that the top level employees continue to make far more than they need. Pay the people below instead of continuing the trend of, I think I saw 398:1, ratio of top level pay to the low wage workers. I’m all about a healthy salary but when the gap becomes too large everyone cries your pulling from their pockets. No they’re just pulling from your 2nd house or 3rd car. The small group of businesses that dont match this, are far an few invetween
ÇhRis Michäël Fo The reason they’re doing it is because they can.
This is Trenton’s way of addressing the high cost of living. They don’t want to make sacrifices by cutting spending and reducing the tax burden on individuals and businesses, so they push this: a back door tax hike. Any benefit that may be experienced through a wage hike will be quickly erased when retailers raise their prices on all goods and services. Either the geniuses in Trenton didn’t think of this, or (more likely) they just don’t care. Basically if you’re not wealthy or on public assistance, it’s becoming all the more difficult to live here.
Still have to work 3 jobs at that rate to live here. This isn’t news.
that’s great for all the people that have been making that for years and now new people coming and doing the same job are going to make that. ?
Jon Jones it is great, because a rising tide raises all boats. Under Governor Kean the state minimum teacher salary was set at $18,500 and veterans were livid over it. But in the end it helped everyone.
Jon Jones agreed
Lauren Reid
They have to raise the wage becuz the price of living has gone up
We just left state yeatrday for good inflation is the biggest reason why
The prices of everything have gone up even when minimum wage stayed the same. Businesses will be just fine.
Really? How much was gas 10 years ago? How much was the minimum wage 10 years ago?
George Williams do your own math. I stand by my statement. The greedy business owners will survive.
And that is the reason why most McDonalds and other businesses are doing self-serve, self checkout. They have to make up for it somehow.
Welcome to McDonald’s we’re sorry your local pizzeria is charging $20 a slice, however we will be happy to sell you that minuscule 1/4 pound burger you can barely see anymore for $19
$10 an hour would be great if all the cost of merchandise stayed the same. Dominos already raised the price of their pizza because of their wage increase. There’s no more dollar menu at McDonald’s. When I owned my business I worked it full-time because I couldn’t afford to hire somebody because as wage increases go up so does the cost of every item and businesses are failing because of Amazon and cheap Chinese imports and the Indians who own convenience stores and selling their shit in stores instead of wholesale like they used to not to mention the tax breaks and loans they get to have businesses in this country while I am not offered the same. $10 an hour is relevant to the same debt to income ratio that $8 an hour was
No one has gotten ahead
We’ll all be skinny if fast food prices rise. That stuff is bad for you anyway.
Should be 15
Linda Sheary Ferguson these jobs are stepping stone jobs, not careers… This is the stupidest thing ever.. what do you think McDonald’s is gonna do????
I’ll tell you..
See those recently place order kiosks… That’s how you gonna order…. Then go in and pick it up… No need for cashier’s aka.. no jobs….. Less workers getting that 15.00 an hr.
And while we’re at it…. Gas stations will now gas stations will all of a sudden be able to go self serve… Aka… no jobs… Do, keep voting for these Democratic scams. People are fucking stupid as hell… Good luck!
Says the unemployed lady
Joe Cottone they would have them anyway..
George Williams whatever . It’s 2019 not 1980
So stupid. It’s called “minimum” for a reason. It’s a starting point…entry level. Prices will rise and jobs will be cut.
Sarah Cioffi what do you currently start your employees at?
Dan Staples 10 and up but they pay suits the job. 10 if no experience more if so
15 min is too much with no experience to start a job. That’s high for a starting rate for many jobs imo
Yeah minimum wage was intended for you to live on it. Not have to work 3 jobs at 18 because you dont qualify to work at a 23+ an hour yet.
You work hard and work your way up and earn more. That’s generally how it is supposed to go. Education and experience go a long way. Not sure how it is now but every retail job I took after I received my college degree paid me way higher than minimum wage because I had that education. Then later on experience helped. I was making 10 an hour in 2000. The point of the American way is to work hard and have that freedom to reach your goals. No one said it would be easy, but it’s possible. NJ is expensive. We can all agree to that. I dont think increasing the minimum is the answer. I dont have the answer but I cant see this being IT.
Solves that problem
Or all self checkouts and kiosk ordering..so much for the high school kids getting their 1st job, learning a work ethic, and developing life skills
Well done?
If they legalize marijuana…..there would be no need for a tax increase and funding would be far more than imagined.
Yes because giving the state government money has worked in the past
George not saying it’s the best but putting certain checks and balances into the bill of how the money will be used, can work. CO funds schools. That would be a start
Kids used to be the ones filling those local “entry-level” jobs to make money while learning how to work. Entry level means starting at the very bottom and working up to a higher, better paid position. Or for higher education to start at a higher salary.
Entry level jobs were not created for those who need to take care of a family of four, the jobs were never expected to create permanent workers. Who get benefits for working 40 hours per week, paid by the employer.
The employer retaliates with kiosks enabling them to cut employee hours, machines are cheaper than people for running a business.
The employer continues to enjoy their profits. The few employees left take on higher responsibility, on the job training for less pay with little to no chance of advancement in the job.
Greed for more is rampant in New Jersey. The state appropriates funds from programs that have an overage. This reduces/cuts programs that help those who are not earning a living wage for their entry-level jobs.
Thanks for the pay raise. Your Big Mac meal comes out to $54.72 lol
Keep in mind, now places are letting people go cause of this. So alot of places will be short staffed, please be kind to those busting their asses to make you happy. Dont be a dick to them. Esp if it’s in food service.
Love everyone that see this as a good thing. Yea it looks good on paper, but now the cost of everything will go up Just as the cost of most consumables prices goes up when gas prices go up
Now your local bagel store will increase the price of bagels, spreads, drinks, etc… just to pay their employee to spread creamcheese on you everything bagel
Guess you get the $10 Big Mac meal
Sandi Tucker Justin Tucker
Remember back in the day when “fast food” was actually fast!
So then employers are just gonna cut peoples’ hours…
Open 24 hours?? Not anymore LOL
Anyone else notice price increases..my kids’ cost for daycare increased too.
So now you will have increased costs, reduced employees, automated systems, reduced consumer consumption, decreased small businesses or a combo of all. Looks great on paper but reality is far different.
So….. food service and stores are not the only things affected by this….those of us that spent money on going to school for skills like phlebotomists, ekg techs etc…. why am I going to be an EMT that spent money on training, busted my ass, risked my own safety at MVAs and sacrificed sleep and holidays with loved ones for $17/hr if someone that has not invested in training etc makes $15/hr???? Meanwhile, still at $15/hr you have to work 80 hours per week to house yourself and have transportation… I hate to complain when I don’t have a solution to offer but this isn’t solving the real issue and it might create more.
Christine Anderson because your wages will end up rising as the minimum wage increases otherwise your field will experience job shortages.
Christine Anderson You guys have been getting severly underpaid for years should be starting at 26.00 an hour and topping out in mid 40’s .
and im pretty sure the ambulance provider could afford it when your charging a couple hundred for a 5 minute trip to the ER
You risked your own safety at an MVA? For $17 bucks an hour? Isn’t that against the EMT code?
Healthcare tech workers do have a chance for advancement with further education-many employers pay for it. Burger flippers who make $15 an hour, don’t usually get past that rate. But you are right, 15 or 17 bucks just doesn’t cut it in NJ. And costs are rising everywhere, have been since the 15. MW became a reality. The problem is that every store/vendor who sells products in NJ has been raising their prices steadily for the past 3 years, in preparation for the $15. per hour mandate by the state. I see runaway inflation in the works.
And more people will be out of a job. So many stores have installed self checkouts. DO NOT USE SELF CHECKOUT. #1-You don’t work for them. #2-You just did someone else’s job.
Also, I’m so thankful for the EMTs etc that volunteer their time and effort……
Not all min wage workers deserves $10. At the very least, they should be able to understand what you are asking and what you need.
Go to McDonalds in Englishtown & get back to me.
Brian Rosseter
Local media news:
Chrome rims, and car stereo systems have been booming since minimum wage went up. Casino stocks way up
This is a super naive take…. 10 dollars an hour is nowhere near a living wage. So to think that people will go bonkers on unnecessary items is laughable.
Christine Barton-Tate watch
Christine Barton-Tate working at McDonald’s isn’t ment for people over the age of 18!!!!
Many already have computers u order your own stuff – just like Europe we r on our way n be prepared for higher taxes … the servers in restaurants in Europe get paid by the hour n no tipping this is what you democrats want???- VOTE RED
Its BullShit
self checkouts and kiosks on their way, burger flippin robots too. Yippie
https://www.livescience.com/61994-flippy-burger-flipping-robot-flops.html
Ocean County Scanner News yep went to a McDonalds in Europe all touch screen you order 1 cashier
We will be like Europe – thank the liberals – hope your weed is worth it

Scott Braden Brian McCabe spam F in the chat ???
Bet ill still get laughed at for askin 30hr.
self checkouts were coming even before the increase !!
Harry Paul Debbie Fetch Arocho
No more $1 menus and we will be pumping our own gas soon
Not really a good thing for small business owners! Some will hire more Illegal Immigrants for a Lower salary putting Americans out of a job! #Trump2020 ??
Lynda Lawrence-Clancy
Yes of course!! They don’t get it
Trump 2020
Don’t be fooled! Phil Murphy does not care about the American worker! He is trying to push ILLEGAL Immigration!!
Stop eating horse meat!!
Phil Murphy is a degenerate liberal scumbag low life from Goldman Sachs which is another thieving bunch of scumbags……
Why not just gain the skills to determine your own wage .instead of having the government force people to pay you 10.00 for the 5 dollars worth of work and skill you provide
Andrew Simons have you ever worked retail? Because I’m assuming, from this comment, that you have not.
Elizabeth Tripp actually i have
Makes the lazy workers feel richer! SMH
People mad about the minimum wage going up to $10… Ok. Did you guys get mad when it made the last jump too?
Damn, I guess people working 40 hour weeks dont desreve to be able to afford a house or anything. But god forbid they have to depend on welfare to eat. Then they’re welfare queens who should just get a job. Its funny though, because alot of people who are on welfare, also work these shitty retail jobs.
Finally!!
Please think for one second- why would politicians care about wages? First thought- all state and federal taxes/workers Comp/social security payments are percentage based. So increase minimum wage forces claimed taxes higher resulting in significantly higher taxes paid.
It also pushes everyone out of the “poverty line”.
Maddy Perkins
ummmm have been earning more then this since I got out of high school in 76
Learn a trade people, don’t wait for the government to bail your ass out.
If you are not making what you want, go to the nearest mirror and blame that person.
“I’ve been making more than this since 76” is exactly the problem. people just got back to 1976 level wages with this.
though rent/real estate went up way faster than inflation did.
Duncan Brown you missed my point. The minimum wage would have to creep up north of 25 per hour to come close to me. I rest my case! Learn a trade.
This state is done. Good luck with starting a business. Apprenticeship trade jobs are all going to die. Automation will take over. McDonald’s Had automated fry stations in the early 90s they did away with them because they were expensive to maintain not anymore they will bring them back. For those of you saying that this is a good thing never paid attention in economics class. You also never owned a business you don’t know what it’s really like to run a business.
Now wait until you hear the complaints about the prices going up!
Good.
About time
It only make cost of products and services to cost more.
Gary Bartz which gets passed into consumers. Hes an idiot.
Hmm now everything else will go up…
Just remember-the State now gets increased revenue on those increased wages. Do you thing that that was their ulterior motive all the time?
Soon it will be all Automated and we will not have to worry about paying 14 yr olds $15 an hour
$25 for a Big Mac, fries and a coke.
you honestly think minimum wage salary is why a mcdonalds meal costs $10?
It’s awesome. Now All those jobs are being automated. Scan your own stuff At the registers. Home depot, five below, target, Walmart, all becoming scan your own so they don’t have to pay anyone $15 an hour to do it. Automation will kill jobs, unless you are in the automation business, then you will be good ??
