****PRESS RELEASE****
LBI (Ship Bottom): On June 22, 2019 at approximately 6:00am, Ship Bottom Police was advised by officers in another jurisdiction of an erratic driver in a four door Toyota that had passed them in excess of 100mph on Long Beach Blvd. That officer and officers from another jurisdiction turned around to maintain observations of the Toyota at a safe distance as it continued into Ship Bottom. There was no vehicle pursuit, whatsoever.
The Toyota entered Ship Bottom and became involved in a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Long Beach Blvd and 11th Street.
Preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the Toyota, a 60 year old male from Conshohocken, PA was traveling at an extreme rate of speed and impacted a Roselle Garbage Truck and a Ford pickup. Both vehicles impacted were stopped at the red traffic signal at the intersection, with the dump truck in the right lane and pickup in the left.
The driver of the Toyota was transported to SOMC where he was pronounced deceased.
Long Beach Blvd was closed from 9th Street to 12th Street for approximately 5 hours.
The accident is still under investigation.

Pamela can you point out where it said they had a death wish? I can’t seem to find that either.
I’m sorry, but doing 100mph through any part of LBI with the way the roads are as far as how torn up they are, bumpy at some points while wavy at others, the constant vehicle activity being summer time and the fact that the road is only 1-2 lanes each direction through the whole stretch besides the occasional turning lane, that is a death wish. Doing 45-50 in the off season when the lights are off and no one is around is even sketchy as hell depending on the vehicle!! Even if this guy, hypothetically, went into cardiac arrest, and that was what caused the initial reckless driving and the crash, that wouldn’t cause him to floor it to 100mph. Not to mention they he has maintained that speed for quite some time, which meant navigating the stretch of road, so I can’t think of any medical reasons for him to be flying yet lucid enough to steer the car properly for any period of time, especially with the conditions of that road. With that all being said, I have to agree that he, most likely, had a death wish or was intoxicated in some way.

Coming from north beach it’s not easy to navigate that going straight to ship bottom if you pass out at the wheel, it’s one lane going the other direction?

Everything is speculation. Everyone has a thought or opinion on what may or may not have happened. It was a rough weekend for tragic accidents this weekend and I pray for the deceased, their families and the survivors.
