Toms River: Upon completion of construction of the Thomas Mathis Bridge which connects NJ 37 with Toms River and Pelican Island/Seaside we noticed the speed limit has been lowered. Prior to construction the speed limit was posted as 50 MPH with a suggested speed of 40 MPH due to the narrow lanes. Recently there have been 40 MPH regulation speed limit signs posted at the base of the bridge, and on the bridge itself.
OCSN looked into this matter with the NJ DOT website, and it shows that NJ 37 still has a regulation speed limit of 50 MPH assigned for all 13 miles of the roadway.
So, what gives? Has the speed limit been lowered, or did the contractor make an error?
OCSN has reached out to the NJ DOT Central Region office for a comment. Nobody answered the phone, but we left a voicemail. We will update the story when (if) we get a call back.
Below is the order taken from the NJ DOT website for regulations of speed limits.

It was like that last year too. I was like WTF!
People will still speed over it
Gonna be hard to wheelie over the bridge and keep the bike at only 40!
people will still fly over the bridge, when the speed limit was 50 everyone was going at least 60mph
40 is comically low. If they want to do this BS, it should be at least 55 in the off-season
I speed over all bridges cuz I want to be off them as quickly as possible. Irrational fear of bridge collapsing ???♀️
Niki Vasta same ! Did you ever watch that movie of the bridge collapse in Minneapolis or wherever it was ?
Laura Michelle no like actual footage for real? I just saw in final destination lol

Wowww and with my luck it would happen just cuz I’m there. Tunnels too
It’s out if they lower it , there will be another hurricane sandy!
State Troopers were running radar on it last week in the A.M.
David Korba they should just move the staties barracks to the bridge.?
I got stopped by the State Police for going over 40 mph on that bridge a couple of months ago.
So all the millions we spent to repair this span and now we have to turtle across it Is it swaying with all the traffic? What is the issue now the lanes are a little wider? Just quick ticket enforcement for some easy money? It would have been better in the long run to just build a new one. If it’s it structural issue we need to look at the engineering firm that inspected the bridge post the work.
The speed limit has been 40 mph for years, no one ever did the speed limit and never will.

It was a suggested cautionary speed limit in yellow signs forever. Now it’s in regulation white.
Nobody’s going to follow it anyway..
Narrow narrow lanes that’s why
this is NJ, what the sign says is wholly irrelevant. I think the parkway’s say 65.
Now enforce it!!!!
