TOMS RIVER – The new pad restaurant that has been under construction – BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse – will be opening in early July, according to management at the Ocean County Mall.
The restaurant will be approximately 7,500 square feet in size and will seat approximately 230 guests. Deep dish pizza and handcrafted beers top the menu that also includes pastas, sandwiches, specialty salads and more.
“We are very excited to add BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse to our dining options and make it a key piece of our redevelopment,” said Tara Melodick, Mall Manager at Ocean County Mall. “I know our customers are going to love their great food and incredible craft beer selection.”
The restaurant is part of an ongoing redevelopment project that will also include a retail and lifestyle hub branching off of the mall where Sears used to be. LA Fitness and Homesense were already announced to open there. The mall will remain opened throughout the redevelopment and the entire project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2020.
I saw the picketers out there today. I guess they didn’t use union labor. The signs said “shame on BJ’s”.

They’ve been protesting since construction began.

Not for anything but there’s a whole building already established where mugsy’s used to be. Like literally right down the road.
I don’t think that building is “legally” available yet…sad it just sits there . In complete disarray now. Such and eye sore.
Jennifer Figner Groff
It has graffiti all over it now too.
Theresa Gorski Masterson exactly -so why doesn’t the planning board say no to a new site until someone cleans up that mess? hmmmm
Ocean County Scanner News No new restaurant businesses until the old ones are cleaned up. period.
Jennifer Figner Groff I think it’s tied up in federal/IRS litigation. Takes years. I believe it closed bc they hadn’t paid taxes…correct me if I’m wrong but they have to reach a deal or have that paid before they release the property-so until then it sits. Planning board can’t do anything about it
Theresa Gorski Masterson there are several closed restaurants on fischer and 37 too. they all didn’t pay taxes? There is a for sale sign up at the old mugsy site.
Jennifer Figner Groff I don’t know about the others I was only commenting on this one. If the sale sign is up then someone can buy but doesn’t mean they have to. Bottom line is if new buildings and businesses will bring customers and money to the town they will vote for it bc money is the deciding factor – always. Its not right but that’s the way unfortunately. Too much has closed in TR bc the taxes are out of hand. I do agree the town should reel it in and try to re-purpose the current buildings but then who knows what shape those are in and what the taxes would be and most often corporations don’t want someone else’s headache per see. Its a lousy circle
