JACKSON – A 55-year old man was arrested and charged after reaching for a .22 caliber rifle during a police encounter, according to Jackson Police.

The township’s police blotter reported police response to a residence on Luxury Circle on Sunday at around 6:40 p.m. for a first aid call. While a subject was being treated by first aid, police escorted another man and woman, both intoxicated, out of the home, police said.

While police were outside with the intoxicate pair, the man strayed from the officers to climb into the bed of a parked pickup truck.

The police blotter stated: “As Officer [Sean] Greenberger approached and shined his flashlight into the bed of the truck, he observed the male bending down to pick up a rifle which was located in the bed of the truck.”

Officers tackled the man off of the truck and recovered the weapon. The man was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

He has since been processed and lodged in the Ocean County Jail.
