WAYNE, NJ — The intoxicated driver who killed three people after crashing into a Route 23 gas station Tuesday morning was charged with three counts of death by auto and aggravated manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes announced.
Jason Vanderee, 29, of Glenwood, was also charged with several drug-related offenses, including possession of hypodermic needles, Valdes said in a press release.
A preliminary investigation by authorities revealed that Vanderee was “driving at an excessive speed at the time of the crash,” Valdes said. (See related: Driver Was Intoxicated In Wayne Triple Fatal Crash: Prosecutor)
Victims Jon Warbeck, 50, of Fair Lawn and his 17-year-old son of Lincoln Park were inside a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro when the crash occurred, Valdes said.
Warbeck’s son, Luke, was a senior at Boonton High School, Lincoln Park Mayor David Runfeldt confirmed.
A gas station attendant, Lovedeep Fatra, 22, of Pequannock, was also killed in the crash, Valdes said.
Vanderee was overdosing on opioids at the time of the incident, PIX11 reported. NBC 4 New York reported that Vanderee authorities administered Narcan to Vanderee at the scene. He suffered only minor injuries, PIX11 reported. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson for treatment.
The crash occurred at about 8:46 a.m. when Vanderee smashed into the vehicles. The accident happened at the Delta gas station near the Wayne Mazda dealership, Valdes previously said.
A 2004 Honda Pilot, 2011 Nissan Rogue, a 2016 ford Transit T-250 van, and the Camaro were involved in the crash. The drivers of the Ford Transit van and Nissan Rogue were treated for minor injuries.
Vanderee is scheduled to appear in Passaic County Central Judicial Processing Court Wednesday afternoon. The state will file a motion for pretrial detention to be heard by a Superior Court judge, Valdes said.
Wayne Mayor Chris Vergano said it was “a very sad day in Wayne as three innocent people lost their lives in a horrific accident this morning. Please keep their families in your thoughts and prayers.”

Why? He’s a victim with a terrible disease. Don’t shame this pillar of humanity it’s not his fault find out who his Dr is and blame them.
Christopher John Karbownik my good friend and his son were innocently killed! Stop passing the blame! He stuck the needle in his arm
Christopher John Karbownik blame his dr for what, making him a dope addict?
You got it ? It’s a disease. It’s his doctor’s fault, it’s big Pharma’s fault, and it’s the dealer’s fault. He’s innocent from any blame because he has a disease.
Christopher John Karbownik that’s no disease that’s a choice and that scumbag is a triple murderer.
Christopher John Karbownik you’re an idiot
This wacko was on drugs an under the influence while driving clearly it was his fault Period no body else’s …. he needs to be held a countable for what he did .
Christopher John Karbownik I disagree 1000%. Perfect example, last June I was hit head on by a large suv, then hit again on the side. Pain is an understatement…I had a crushed chest, heart damage and a concussion (with a seatbelt on). I was on alot of pain meds just to be able to breathe. 3 months I couldn’t lift anything heavier then a cup of coffee (my only way to avoid wiring my chest back together). For months I was on heavy duty pain meds. I had my own rules to follow, never more then 5 pills a day (doctors allowed up to 9 a day), I never took them before noon. I know it sounds crazy but I refused to become an addict. I can easily see how one would get addicted. In the beginning it was to be able to breathe and survive another day…after weeks/months a pain killer allowed me to do p.t, then a pain killer would allow me to be able to do normal stuff. I had to keep the mindset that I never can rely on pain meds to become my normal life. 8 months later I’m back to me. There’s still days I have pain and every now and then need a pain killer to help get through the damp rainy days. But I made it through 6 months of pure hell without becoming addicted. It requires personal accountability for our own actions.
Don’t let this troll get you all going. He is being sarcastic and posts on every single article about drugs or over dosing. Pretty bad at it as well as usually he just copy and pastes shit.
Shouldn’t have been given Narcan. Asshole
This scumbag drug addict does not deserve to breath another second , I would make into a speed bump on route 23 on a Saturday afternoon.
