TOMS RIVER – While news outlets receive countless tips and leads on potential stories, not every tip necessarily signals “emergency.”

Jersey Shore Online received word this afternoon of an evacuation at the downtown Toms River Wells Fargo bank. A photo shows a group of people standing on the street outside the building beside a fire truck.

Naturally, a new reporter’s brain says “FIRE!” However, that was not the case here.

Jillian Messina of the Toms River Police Department clarified that the evacuation “was due to the building smelling like smoke from burnt popcorn.”

The fire department soon after deemed the building safe for reentry.

So it just goes to show, even burnt popcorn can make the news.
