MANAHAWKIN – Motorists take note: traffic will be shifted from the new bridge to the reconstructed Old Causeway Bridge on Feb. 5 as the Route 72 Manahawkin Bay Bridges project continues.
New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced that contractor George Harms Construction Co. will be shifting Route 72 westbound traffic from the newly constructed Causeway Bridge into a single lane over the reconstructed Old Causeway Bridge from 7-11:30 a.m. The shift will reopen this lane on the Old Causeway Bridge to traffic for the first time since 2016.
Eastbound traffic will remain the same, on the New Causeway Bridge.
While only one lane in each direction on Route 72 has been open since October, two lanes are expected to be reopened before the start of summer, stated NJDOT.
On Feb. 6, the center median U-turn on Cedar Bonnet Island near the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge Environmental Trail between the main Causeway Bridges and the West Thorofare Bridges will be closed in both directions for drainage work.
Motorists wishing to make U-turn will be redirected while work continues.
