LAKEWOOD – An off-duty New Jersey State Trooper helped apprehend a drunk driver attempting to escape the crash scene on foot, Lakewood Township Police said.

Police did not release the name of the 44-year-old Jackson man, who they say was intoxicated Saturday night when his Mercedes sideswiped a van. The six persons in the van were reportedly uninjured.

The crash happened at Cross and James streets.

The off-duty trooper, who witnessed the crash, chased down the suspect and helped local police place the man under arrest.

Lakewood Police said the man was charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest and a spate of motor vehicle violations.
