JACKSON – Jackson Township Police arrested a man who ran a red light and sped away Jan. 13.

Jackson resident David Asay, 45, was charged with eluding, resisting arrest, aggravated assault, driving while intoxicated, driving a vehicle in violation of interlock device order, careless driving, reckless driving, driving while suspended, failure to observe a traffic control device, failure to maintain lane and speeding.

He was processed and taken to Ocean County Jail.

Around 8:19 p.m., Officer Robert Gravina saw the 2004 Mercury Sable driven by Asay run a red light on West County Line Road. Gravina clocked him going 70 in a 40 mile-per-hour zone.

Police say Asay disregarded Gravina’s attempts to pull him over. Asay pulled into a nearby funeral home and went over multiple curbs and into a restaurant parking lot to elude him. Gravina terminated his pursuit.

Police instead arrived at the residence registered to the Mercury. Officer Greg Schmidt saw the vehicle on North Boston Road, and again, police said Asay attempted to elude them. He did finally stop at the intersection of Frank Applegate Road and Bennetts Mills Road, and when another officer, Kale Mabey, attempted to approach, they said Asay accelerated and nearly hit Mabey.

Asay finally stopped in the Jackson Baptist Church parking lot, where he was taken into custody after a struggle with officers.
