TOMS RIVER – On the recommendation of the county’s Natural Lands Trust Fund Advisory Committee, the Ocean County Freeholders approved the purchase of more than 27 acres in three locations in Toms River.
The county will purchase 6.99 acres on Cleveland Street, 4.98 acres on Sayreville Street (both off Route 527), and 15.4 acres on North Bay Avenue just south of Green Leaf Court.
The Cleveland Street property sits adjacent to 111 acres of wetlands and conservation easement lands. The headwaters of the Toms River run nearby.
One professional appraisal was ordered to assess the property; the county will pay $155,000 plus up to $1,270 in property tax adjustments for it.
“We would eventually like to put a trail system – a walking and hiking trail system – through there,” Freeholder Gerry P. Little said. “It also has approvals for an 18-lot subdivision, and so it’s very important to conserve this area. It is a forested area.”
That’s great but when will the planning board revise the master plan to indicate they plan to jam as much high density housing as they can along route 9 & clear cut all the trees they possibly can?

Clem Clemson they will never revise. We’re stuck with that
Pat Lorraine Durante the plan should reflect it then, or just throw it out & stop spending time & $ to have one. You don’t need a degree to understand that Rte 9 as it is cannot accommodate additional growth. Sunset Ave is filled with potholes from traffic trying avoiding 9, the surrounding residential roads are being turned into city streets.

Wasn’t this voted on? And it was a no , and they do it anyway ?
Wasn’t it ???? I’m asking you, bc I think it was !!! I???
Kim Podesta because they say so and we no longer have a say
Kim even when a town votes it down, the county has the right to buy it from whoever the land owner is. We had a similar thing happen down here. In our case, the owner wished to sell it to the county, but the town opposed it because it was developable land. There is an unwritten understanding that the county “generally” abides to the town’s wishes but in this particular case the land owner fought the town and the town ultimately overturned its original recommendation to give the blessing for the county to buy it. Political bullshit is all it is…?
Tonya Leigh , I’m so tired of this political b.s.!!! They wonder why people go postal on them !!!
I believe that question was for a bond to purchase more land and that was voted down. They seem to keep spending money on open space but still allowing more home, condos and apartments to be built. We need business and jobs, Sears, Kmart done, Look at all the half full strip malls.
The article says county (Freeholders) bought it. The vote in November was for Toms River officials. Two separate areas of government.
The county does purchase land often.
Sooooo who’s moving in ) ?
